Skate Park At The Smyrna, TN YMCA

I was driving down Sam Ridley the other day on my way to Antioch when both my daughter and I gasped with delight to see that there was a skateboard park at the new Smyrna YMCA.

I don't have a membership to the Y but am seriously considering getting one now. I love the convenience and the affordability of the town center and will attend the Tang So Do class there for as long as it is offerred but the lure of indoor swimming and skateboarding for the kids is quite compelling.

Do you have the scoop on the new Y? Post your comments here.

Gorgeous Day in Smyrna, TN

My weather feed is telling me that it is 60 degrees outside today in the beautiful town of Smyrna. I am off from work and catching up on a few blogging duties for some of my other endeavors. I think it is high time that I ditch the duty and get outside to enjoy.

It will be time soon when we will all long for spring, if you are not already longing for it. Days like today make you wish for spring even more.

Hooray for sunshine.

Expansion of Rutherford County Blogger and Podcaster's Group

I'm so thankful to those that bravely came out to the first Smyrna, TN Blogger and Podcaster's Group Meeting. I can't help but be suprised by it. Over the course of the last three months, it has become clear that there is opportunity for growth.

Month two saw a change to the Rutherford County Blogger and Podcaster's Group after having such a good turnout from the LaVergne crowd.

Month three will now see a change of name to the Middle Tennessee Blogger and Podcaster's Group so as to include our friends from neighboring counties.

Our monthly meetings are geared to be social interactions and learning opportunities. I'm not the most organized person in the world but I do have a mind that longs for new experiences and knowledge and so, it is my goal to bring you at least one new topic of discussion, if not only for five minutes, each meeting.

I hope going forward that the relationships we form in the newly named Middle Tennesse Blogger and Podcaster's Group will last for years to come and that we might actually work to help promote and educate one another in all areas of life.

I look forward to making new friends and reinforcing existing relationships at the next meet up on January 14th, 2:00 PM at Espresso Joe's in Smyrna, TN.

We can discuss other venues at that time.

Help for Katrina Victims in Smyrna, TN

I've been contacted by someone who is interested in helping with clothing/household items or toys for Katrina victims who are in the Smyrna, TN area.

Does anyone know for certain where one might contact a local agency to provide such assistance?

While at first I might say to contact the Red Cross, that might take more time than we actually have to work with here. My second guess would be the Smyrna, TN Fire Department because it is they who are coming to the Town Center on Monday, December 19th to pick up the unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots program. I would only imagine that they may have a way that you could volunteer and/or are earmarking a certain number of things for victims of Katrina.

Finally, I think I might recommend the local Second Harvest Food Bank or the Police Department.

If you know of a particular organization that is working to supply toys or services specifically to the Katrina victims, please post your comments here or email me directly at dailydiablogger AT gmail dot com.

Kindest regards, readers.

Next Blogger's and Podcaster's Meet Up

We've decided that the next blogger and podcaster's meet up will be on January 14th at 2:00 PM. We will continue to have this at Espresso Joe's in Smyrna, TN.

This session was attended by Aunt B. of Tiny Cat Pants, Dewayne of Chip Talks, John H. from Salem's Lots and Amy from Bad Bad Ivy.

Thanks to all who attended. I hope you had as much fun as you might have expected. I will post pictures at a later time.

We spoke about our lives, other bloggers and technology as well. I told the bloggers about Woot.com, InBubbleWrap.com, PodCastAlley.com, and discussed some tools online that you can download for free such as OpenOffice.org, a program called NVU (N View is the correct pronounciation) and of course, the GIMP.

Schnurbusch was the Barrista over at Espresso Joe's. He says he has a blog but I can't find it. Dude, please comment as I would like to point folk your way.

Join us on Saturday, January 14th at 2:00 PM at Espresso Joe's in Smyrna, TN:

Live Blogging from Espresso Joe's

We are live blogging from Espresso Joe's. Aunt B. is talking about a camoflauge yarn that you can buy to John from Salems Lots. I feel totally out of place due to the fact that they are so much more hilarious than I. All I can talk about is Monkey Butt Powder.

If you missed the meeting, you are really missing something great. We are so sad that Kleinheider did not join us. We wanted to find his home address and just show up there.

Dewayne from Chip Talks is here and Amy from Bad Bad Ivy has also graced our presence.

Conversation has now turned to crocheting.

Thanks to Espresso Joe's for the hospitality. Thanks to Schnurbusch over at My Space for his tremendous service.

I'll be posting on our next meeting soon.

Toys For Tots

Today is the Rutherford County Blogger and Podcaster's Meet-Up. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

In a previous post, I told you that the Smyrna Martial Arts Group was participating in a toy drive for Toys for Tots and for the elderly. All the toys collected will be left with the Smryna Town Center and on Monday will be picked up by the Fire Department.

It is being said that there will be 3,000 children without toys for Christmas in Rutherford County alone this year. If you are interested in making a donation, bring your unwrapped gift to 1.) the Smyrna Town Center by Sunday or 2.) To the Rutherford County Blogger and Podcaster's meeting today and I will take it to the Town Center.

Vogue Cleaners in Smyrna, TN

BadBadIvy has this to say about Vogue Cleaners in Smyrna, TN:
I highly suggest Vogue Cleaners on Sam Ridley Parkway. It's not the cheapest dry cleaners in town (I know, I called them all to get prices), but it's reasonably priced, and you get a nifty 5% discount if you pay in advance. I know, 5% doesn't even cover the tax, but since I prefer to pay in advance anyway, it's kinda nifty that I get a discount for something that's my preference anyway.

Hooray! It Is Confirmed

Tip of the hat to Bad Bad Ivy over at The Life and Times of One Hot Mama by way of the Rutherford AM (like I really have time to read it). Maybe them folk could give me a personal heads up once in a while - is that too much to ask? After all, my blog is free PR for them, right? Moving on.

It would seem that we citizens of Smyrna will be getting a Target after all.

You heard me. A Target! Now, go save your money so you can spend it all at the new Target. Just think about it, no more Antioch or Murfreesboro to enjoy the shopping splendor that is to be had when one visits a Target.

Rejoice and be thankful you are alive.

Thursday, December 8, 2005

Rumors, Rumors, Rumors...

I don't like to spread rumor and I should probably do some fact checking but I gotta tell you what I heard the other day. I heard that there is going to be a Target put in behind the Lowe's in Smyrna. I have a feeling that would make a lot of Smyrna residents very happy.

Has anyone else heard this and can you point us to any facts?

I've Been Sick

Sorry for not providing your local entertainment but, alas... I've been sick. I've just taken some cold medicine so I don't know if I can hold on much longer.

Dewayne - I've got my wireless going! Yay! I didn't think I would be able to figure it out but I did and I'm soooo happy.

Playstation 2 Slim Goes Dead and Getting a PS3 For Free?

My PS2 Slim has died. I've read about the laser being really crappy. I've not had this console for that long, really. I've contacted Sony to see if I could get them to swap out my console for a new one. I'll let you know how that works out. In the meantime, I thought I'd be a little creative and see if there were any offers out there online to get some free stuff (namely the PS3).

I'll let you know how that works, too.

31st Annual Holiday Parade

This Sunday (Dec 4) is the town of Smyrna's 31st annual holiday parade, starting at 2 p.m. This year's theme for the parade is Christmas in Toyland.

Here's some more details from the Town of Smyrna's web site:
This year’s Christmas parade will feature decorated floats representing churches, schools, civic clubs, and commercial organizations. High school and middle school bands from Smyrna and LaVergne will entertain the crowd with a host of holiday selections. There will also be marching units, fire companies and local elected officials. Santa Claus will be in his place of honor at the rear of the parade, high above the crowd. The parade starts at 2 p.m. sharp from the entrance of the Rotary Soccer Park, just off Mayfield Drive. It will then travel to the intersection of Mayfield and South Lowry and travel north on Lowry toward Sam Ridley Parkway, and end at the Lee Victory Recreation Park.

Come on out Sunday afternoon for an afternoon of fun and to help get into the holiday spirit! Hope to see you there!

If you need to know more about the parade, you can visit the Smyrna's web site which includes more details and an FAQ.

Update: Got the date wrong in the first post. The parade is Sunday aftenrnoon. I apologize for the mis-information.

Smyrna High Schoolers Prepare for Mid-State Auditions

Good luck to Keira Biggs (Freshman) and Lissa Medlin (Freshman) of Smyrna High School as they prepare for their auditions for All Mid-State.

All Mid-State Auditions will be held on Saturday, December (correction) 10th at McGavock High School in Nashville, TN. If you've never attended, here is some advice:

1. Bring your own toilet paper
2. Arrive before the crack of dawn, or at least one hour to two hours early, depending on how long you would like to be there for the day.
3. Bring money for lunch. There will be vendors there but there are also restaurants nearby.

Get more information about All Mid-State Auditions.

Did I miss someone? Please post your comment here. Take pride in this opportunity.

Got used books?

It's no secret that I'm a read-a-holic. And one of the things about being a read-a-holic is that you aquire a lot of books. But sometimes the question is--what do you do with those books after you're done with them? (Assuming you don't want to keep them to read again someday, that is.)

Well, the Smyrna Public Library has a way to get those books out of your house and to help hurricane victims. At the library last week, I saw signs and a box that the library is collecting books to rebuild the Biloxi library system, which was pretty much destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

I am currently going though my books and creating a pile to take and donate to the cause and I encourage other readers to do the same.

I'm Back

I am back and rejuvinated after several days off from blogging. Over the course of my few days away, I did catch part of a program that CNN had on about bloggers. Blogging is increasingly becoming part of main stream media as is evidenced by Wolfe Blitzer's The Situation Room. I read an article on that. They have blog feeds running in the background to capture real time feedback and fuels their discussion on certain topics.

I've had this idea to run my own podcast show on current topics, along the lines of Glenn Beck, and my rss feeds would be the source of my information/inspiration. Anyway, another random idea shared with you.

While I was out, I did manage to take part in some of the Black Friday activities. I'm here to tell you that it was COLD Friday morning and if you plan to be one of the first 50 at Best Buy next year, you'd better be there before 2:30 AM. I got there at 4:00 AM and a fellow in front of me's mother-in-law had been there since 2:30 and was number 51. They were pretty organized. The folks with whom I waited were very friendly and we all offered to watch each other's place in line if one had to step out and retrieve something from their vehicles. Best Buy also served free Starbucks, which was way cool.

A note on the outlook of our economy, it seems that everyone that huddled in my group was pretty optimistic about our economy and had no problems spending the money they were about to spend.

Now, on to another topic. I saw a clip the other day about dollar stores and how you could save money by shopping there. Anyone out there care to weigh in on the topic? I'm about to do my grocery shopping and thought I'd drop by the Dollar General to check it out. I've been to Dollar General's in the past and other dollar stores but have never been that impressed with the money saving potential. I will post about the new Dollar General on Nissan Drive at a later time.

Finally, if you would be interested in being a guest blogger on the This is Smyrna, TN blog, please drop me a line at dailydiablogger at gmail dot com.

Rutherford County Blogger and Podcaster's Group Meet Up

We'll, I had an enjoyable time at today's blogger and podcaster's group. Chip Talks and Bad Bad Ivy have quickly become friends. We discussed the Black Friday website, which I was desperately trying to keep secret (although DeWayne talked about it first to me) and setting up my laptop with wireless access and the bloggers that we'd like to meet. Bad Bad Ivy and myself were also trying to help Chip Talks find inspiration.

I think he may have found some inspiration in his party last night, however. I wonder if he will blog about that? Hmmm...

Our meeting today was at Espresso Joe's in Smyrna, TN. They had wireless access, however, Chip lost the connection several times. We discussed having our next meeting at Southern Latte. I must find out if they have wireless access. So, until further notice, we plan to meet December 17th at 2:00 PM at Southern Latte.

As mentioned earlier, we discussed bloggers who we'd like to meet. One name was mentioned by all three parties and that was Aunt B. of Tiny Cat Pants. Aunt B. isn't for everyone and if you have children, please be cautious when pulling up her site around them. However, you will find quite a bit of adult humor here. I've been really inspired by the wit of the folks in the blogosphere and Aunt B. has got to be one of the wittiest out there. So, Aunt B., if you are reading this blog, consider yourself invited to the next Rutherford County Blogger and Podcaster's Group. We don't sit around and talk Geek Talk the whole time but that does account for the greater part of our conversations.

Oh, and by the way, it does look like Southern Latte is a wireless hot spot.

Smyrna, TN is Worth Talking About

I've been talking with some friends about blogging and communication. I'm glad that I recognized that I could give the community of Smyrna, TN a voice. The citizens a voice. There are a lot of wonderful things in the town of Smyrna, TN and I saw that.

My friend introduced me to someone the other night and told her that I advertise for people. Truth is, I told her, that I merely inform. This blog was designed for the community and it only seems right to promote local businesses and promote local events. I do this for free. The revenue generating item on this blog is the ads on the nav and the shirt store that I have. Every mention of companies on here have been unsolicited. There are plenty of wonderful things to talk about in the town of Smyrna, TN. If you have an idea, please post your comments here.

One day I have a dream to break lose of those shackles that bind me. One day I will write with style and grace and paint pictures in the hearts and minds of my readers that will forever linger. One day I will find a voice that is confident and direct that feels neither joy nor sorrow, a steady and even voice. I will work to that end day after day and post after post and you will be my friend in that journey.

Southern Living at Home

Well, I missed karate tonight to attend a home show. It was the Southern Living at Home show hosted by Gina. I'd been to plenty of catalog shows before and knew straightaway that I wasn't a big fan of them. I mean, think of it, I was on my way to KARATE and my friend was like, you've got to go with me to this show at my sister's house. Well, I get there, we do question/answers type quiz where you get points for answering yes to certain things. It was no suprise that I got a 3 while the other ladies there got like 17 and 19... I'm not the domestic type, you see... So I won the twinkie. That's what will be served for dessert if you come to my apartment.

Now, I must admit that the show was a pretty good time. I think that perhaps, in this day and age, that a couple's show might be more fun. I mean, let's face it, my husband does most of the cooking and he loves the Food Network. I, on the other hand, attend karate and would rather be doing this or reading a book or taking a walk or playing tennis or sleeping rather than cooking or anything else domestic.

There are plenty of you out there who do REALLY enjoy this and I am glad because I need someone to keep me fat...

If you love Southern Living Magazine and are interested in having a party, you should get in touch with Shonna Harrison. Her email address is shonna harrison at comast dot net.

Have a look at Shonna's website at SouthernLivingatHome.com/ShonnaHarrison.

According to Shonna, Southern Living at Home launched in January of 2001 and, with the help of an already established brand, reached their first years sales goal of 7M in one month. The business sold 26M in the first year and is on target to become a billion dollar direct sales company.

Pictured left is Shonna Harrison leading the show at Gina's.

Image hosted by Photobucket.comAngela Storelli is justly crowned as most domestic.

Madness Among Our Youth

Query: Are today's youth any more violent than the youth of 40 years ago?

By now, we are all used to shootings at school. Sending our kids off to school is like sending them off to war to some small, if only miniscule, degree. Rutherford County's emergency preparedness drills serves as further evidence of the changing times. Today's shooting is a horrible reminder of those changing times.

In Smyrna, TN, today on bus 116, the journey home for the students was interrupted by violence. Two young ladies dooked it out. The bus drive called the police and the two young ladies were carried off in handcuffs. Then the bus broke down.

Smyrna, TN is really a great town, however difficult that sale may be at the moment. I could have not mentioned this but I think these incidents need to be brought to light and I'm not so sure that we shouldn't mention Juvenile's names in cases like this. Does anyone know if that extends to acts of violence?

  • The new YMCA will open tomorrow (Nov 3) at 5 a.m. Opening was delayed two days to get the gas connected from what I understand.
  • Early voting for mayor and town council ended yesterday. Regular voting takes place next Tuesday (Nov 8th). I went and early voted, took all of three minutes. There was no line. My parents went last night and no line. If you have not voted, please make plans to do so Tuesday.
  • Jim and Nick's BBQ is open near the new Public. Great food, nice restuarant and good service. Definitely worth a trip!

Rutherford County Blogger's and Podcaster's Group

Okay, I vote to change the Smyrna, TN Blogger and Podcaster's Group to the Rutherford County Blogger and Podcaster's Group. Seems only fair since two out the the three folk who showed up and the last and first EVER meeting of the Smyrna, TN Blogger and Podcaster's Group were from LaVergne.

What say you folk? Our next meet up is on November 19th at 2:00 PM over at Espresso Joe's. If you have a laptop with wireless, bring it. I'll make plans to bring my digital camera.

Espresso Joe's Coffee Co is located at:
901 Rock Springs Rd.

Hey, Chip and Ivy, maybe Michael will come out to play if there are single women bloggers?

Fall Orchaestra Concert at Smyrna High

I would have posted on this earlier had I known about it. Tonight was the Smyrna High Fall Orchaestra concert. It was quite lovely. Among the talent, Keira Biggs composed her own piece and the orchaestra played it. Congratulations to Keira and a fine job to all.

Halloween in the Park

Halloween in the Park
If you've recently relocated to the Smyrna, TN area, you'll want to know about Halloween in the Park. I've attended every year since I've moved here. It is fun for people of all ages with hayrides, costume contests and food, food, food. Local businesses come out to show off their wares and offer coupons, have drawings for free stuff, and pass out samples. This year's Halloween in the Park will be held on October 29th in the Sharp Springs Natural Area from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM. For more information, visit the town of Smyrna's website at http://www.townofsmyrna.org.

Another report from Fat Mo's

Despite my stomach churning for three plus hours watching UT play Alabama, I was still pretty hungry after the game. I decided I'd give Fat Mo's a try and see what happened.

This time I was successful and got food.

The food was excellent. The burgers were up to the usual standards set by the Murfeesboro store. I got seasoned fries which were crisp, hot and delicious. In all areas, the food was excellent.

The service was acceptable. I think they're a bit overwhelmed by the business. I don't honestly think Fat Mo's is set up to handle the unrelenting rush that has come upon in the first few days it is open. I asked for cheese on my burger and it was not on the burger (a pretty serious offense in my eyes). In Fat Mo's defense, I do not believe I was charged for the cheese ....it was probably a misunderstanding.

Observing Fat Mo's I think the way to go right now is call ahead, to go ordering. I think the drive in is not going to help things as it's a window only....pull up, place your order and then wait while a huge line ensues. But I did take a menu home and can call ahead in future.

So, summing it all up. I'd give the food an A while I'd give the service a C. Overall, a solid B for the whole experience.

Smyrna, TN Blogger and Podcaster's Group - Next Meeting

We just got back from our very first Smyrna, TN blogger and podcaster's group. It was great. The first meeting was held at the Hilltop Rosenwald Park and the weather was made to order beautiful. We had expected rain and cold weather conditions. Badbadivy and ChipTalks were there and we decided that our next meeting would be held at Espresso Joe's on November 19th at 2:00 PM CST.

Espresso Joe's Coffee Co is located at:
901 Rock Springs Rd.
Smyrna, TN

I think ChipTalks is going to bring his laptop and do a live blog from the meeting.

Fat Mo's Is The Place To Be

Unlike Michael, I was able to complete an order at Fat Mo's last night. I'm not sure they were prepared for the demand in this area. It looks like a family of Middle Easterners run the place and they were working their tail ends off last night. The line for the drive-thru extended to the road and I had to park and go inside for fear of my car over-heating.

I noticed, immediately, the menu's and the lack of graphics and color. This is good, it keeps their overhead costs down somewhat. I think it also sets them apart from other fast food places. It makes a statement in its lack of things. Anyway, the line inside the store was not much better. It nearly extended to the exit.

I completed my order and waited. Waited some more. When my order came up, it was wrong. They quickly corrected it but when I got it home, it was still wrong. I had asked for no condiments on any of the combos but got condiments on all the combos. Good thing I wasn't allergic. I think I will let them slide on that given the fact that they clearly did not have the full capacity to handle the demand.

The burger itself, for which I think Fat Mo's is most known for, was good. I think it was better than any fast food joint around. But the fries could use something. By the time I got home, they were a soggy, greasy mess. They were not crisp. Perhaps this is another side-effect of their overwhelming demand... I don't know. Bottom line, I think I'll give them another try in the future.

Don't Forget Saturday's The Date

Saturday, October 22nd at 2:00 PM will be the first meeting of the Smyrna, TN Blogger's and Podcaster's Group. This will be at the Hilltop Rosenwald Park. I know it is going to rain but there is a rather large pavillion and several smaller ones so I think we will be fine. Looking forward to the gathering. Bring your own beverages and whatever else you'd like. This is a meet and greet. Let me know if you plan to attend.

Smyrna, TN Blogger and Podcaster's Group - Meeting Date and Time

Saturday, October 22nd will be the first Smyrna, TN Blogger's and Podcaster's Group Meeting. This first meeting will be short and informal (perhaps 30-45 minutes). I'm imagining this to be more of a social activity at this point, advancing into more of a social/educational activity. For now, I think it will be nice for everyone to introduce themselves and get to know each other.

I'm not a leader by any stretch and will probably not be that great of an organizer but I will try.

So, I'm proposing Saturday, October 22nd, say 2:00 PM at Hilltop Rosenwald Park. There is a playground, so bring your kids, and plenty of pavillions and picnic tables so I don't think we will need to reserve any special space. I will bring a balloon so you can pick me out of the crowd.

Feel free to bring your spouse, or a date. Some folks might not be able to get out of the house otherwise. Once they come to a meeting the plan will be to bore them to death!

Please let me know your plans to attend. I'm open to suggestion, if this does not work for you, let's discuss. I look forward to meeting each of you and forming new friendships along the way.

Dine In America

You may have heard that today is Dine For America night. Tonight, several restaurants are donating all profits to the Hurricane relief efforts. Five restuarants in Smyrna are taking part. So why not dine out tonight? It's for a great cause.

Local Bank Review

Back in college, I established account with a certain bank who I will leave nameless here. After years of being a customer, I was assaulted with fees for things like coming in more than once a month to conduct banking transactions. Also, I was pretty unhappy that whenever I came in, I felt like just another number to them. I realize I am not exactly Daddy Warbucks putting cash into the bank, but at least a smile or something would be nice.

So, when I moved to Rutherford County, I decided I'd seek out another bank. I landed upon Calvary Bank, which from what I understand is a local, county-wide bank. I was impressed not only with their service (their drive up window at the location on Sam Ridley opens at 7 a.m. on weekedays and they have Saturday hours, something my old bank did not) but the friendliness of the people. My parents banked there and often times when I'd go in to run an errand for my mom, they'd always remember my name and greet me cordially. All the employees would make small talk with me. In short, it felt like something out of the Andy Griffith show--a hometown bank that cared.

Since that time, I've started a couple of accounts with them. When I feared I'd been the victim of identity theft, they helped me quickly and seamlessly open new accounts and made sure I'd not have any checks directed to the wrong accounts. I've gone to them for other services and they've always been kind, accomodating, polite and friendly. In short--a model of professionalism and everything I'd hope a bank would and should be . Now, I generally tend to visit the branch on Sam Ridley in Smyrna, but the one time I had to use the other Smyrna location, they were very friendly and helpful as well.

If you're new to the area or a long time resident who is tired of being treated like just a number and an annoyance by your bank, give Calvary a look. I think you'll be glad you did.

Smyrna, TN Blogger's and Podcaster's Group - First Meeting

Hello all. I do believe we've got enough interested folks to go ahead and begin discussion on a meeting date and venue for our very first Smyrna, TN Blogger's and Podcaster's Discussion Group. I envision this as an informal gathering. Perhaps over coffee or dinner or lunch, once per month. As for me, Saturday afternoons or evenings would be best. Please let me know your availability and preferences.

I want to be sure to be as flexible as possible with regards to people's family/schedule/and economic situations. If it makes more sense for us to gather at a park in a pavillion on a Saturday to let kids play whilst we talk among ourselves, then we should consider this as an option. Perhaps we could do a picnic?

JC Penny At Hickory Hollow Mall

Dewayne over at Chip Talks hears rumor that they are closing the JC Penny down in Hickory Hollow Mall. That really bites because that is about the only place I can get decent clothing for my kiddies.

Now, want to hear something that I think will make a lot of people a little upset? I think the 840 corridor is a prime location for a new mall. Attracting residents of Smyrna, Nolensville, Lebanon and Murfressboro. I also think that back by the 1-24 Expo might be a good location, too.

I don't like to go to Hickory Hollow Mall, but I do. I prefer it more to Stones River because the Penny's Store there has a better selection.

Proposed Move of Magnet Program in Smyrna, TN

Harry Gill, the Directorof Rutherford County Schools, plans to propose to the Board of Education that the magnet program at Thurman Francis Elementary be moved to Smyrna Primary.

Supposedly this move will not comprise the program but is intended to make room for an additional 300 regular education students. There was no indication when this might be proposed or when this might occur if approved. My best guess would be next year.

Sound off. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Another week begins in Smyrna

Well, it's a rainy Monday here in Smyrna.

In the wake of hurricane Rita, I'm shocked that gas prices have not risen. Good job to some of the local gas stations for not raising gas prices right away. The consumers out there thank you for doing that. But we could be in for some higher prices in the aftermath of this storm.

I have to admit my heart is warmed by the response to the victims of Katrina and Rita from our fair city. All around, we hear of churches, groups and private citizens giving to help our brothers and sisters who are affected by this. I know our community is not alone in the response but I'm glad to hear of us going above and beyond to do what needed to be done.

Things To Do In The Town of Smyrna, TN

The town of Smyrna, TN is beautiful. There are many historic buildings that continue to be used for business. There is a revitalization project currently underway.

Smyrna Town Center
Many of my activities center around the Smyrna Town Center. The Town Center has a fitness facility that offers Karate, Aerobics, Machine and Free Weights, a Pool and Tennis and Racquetball at very affordable prices. You can pay as you go, there are no membership fees unless you wish to purchase a quarterly pass. I've always been thankful that this resource existed.

The YMCA
There is a YMCA which is being constructed on Sam Ridley Parkway. I'm sure that this will be a state of the art facility but I hope that the Smyrna Town Center will continue to be able to offer their activities as an alternative.

Parks and Recreation
In addition to the fitness facilities, there are a number of parks and mini parks around the area. There are so many, in fact, that I've not been to all of them. The largest of them is the Lee Victory Recreation Park at 110 Sam Ridley Parkway. The playground equipment is only a couple years old and there is a large walking trail, softball and football fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and plenty of picnic shelters. This park is located across the street from the Smyrna Golf Course and the Airport. Learn more about the Smyrna Park and Recreation Facilities here.

What would you like to see in the town of Smyrna, TN?
I've named just a few of the activies that there are in the town of Smyrna, TN. I come from a very large city - St. Louis, MO. I really like the small town atmosphere but do long for culturally enriching activies. I would like to see more activities in the parks, perhaps plays or orchaestra performances. I'd also think that the town would really rally around a community theater. I'm very excited about what is going on with the revitalization project. The town of Smyrna, TN is a beautiful place, let's keep it that way. Add your comments about activities that you would like to see offered in the town of Smyrna, TN.

Local Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
Please, don't forget to help raise money to provide Christmas for the children of hurricane Katrina. We have a number of evacuees that have taken up temporary residence in Smyrna, TN. If you would like to know more about how you can help, please contact me at dailydiablogger@gmail.com and read about how the Smyrna Martial Arts school is taking steps to provide these children a wonderful Christmas. The Monolithic Dome and Why America Should Consider As a Housing Solution For Evacuees

It's no secret that I love the monolithic dome and if I had the money to do so, I'd own one. Now with that being said, I'll make my case in favor of the monolithic dome as a housing solution for the evacuees of hurricane Katrina not because of my undying love of the structure but because of its durability and ease of construction.

According to recent reports, we are entering a period of turbulent weather. For the next twenty or thirty years, it is expected that storms will increase in severity and frequency. Take a look at what is going on in the Atlantic right now.

According to the Monolithic Dome Institute's website, these structures are disaster resistant shelters. Furthermore,
The Monolithic dome, by its very nature, can and will withstand hurricane winds. The strongest hurricanes push with 150-mile-per-hour (mph) winds or 100 pounds per square foot. That force means absolutely nothing to a Monolithic Dome.
"But what about the Superdome?", you ask. The Monolithic Dome Institute has information on that structure as well. It is not a "monolithic dome" which is made of concrete, rather, it was made of steel and other materials. Concrete also has thermal mass so if the power goes off, it takes hours before temperature changes are felt.

I was delighted to learn that one family took shelter in a lesser version of the monolithic structure, the EcoShell, and fared the storm well. The EcoShell has been used as a demonstration home in Haiti to help teach residents the construction process. The EcoShell offers increased protection, more square footage than the traditional building techniques (mud huts) and cost about the same. Learn more about monolithic dome structures in Alabama and Louisianna that weathered the storm.

Yes, Virginia, I think I am a hopeless evangelist of the Monolithic Dome and perhaps one day Habitat for Humanity will take note and begin building using this construction method.

Finally, it should also be noted that, according to reports, the New Orleans area is sinking. The ground upon which the city was built used to get its layers of sediment from the Mississippi floods. Since levys have been built, that is no longer the case. Furthermore, over time, the ground that the city rests on becomes more compact with the layers below. I'm no engineer by any stretch of the imagination but can clearly see how this is possible and understand the horrors that a flood can inflict upon that town. I wonder how many of the people who are advocating rebuilding that city actually plan to live there?

Please, don't forget to help raise money to provide Christmas for the children of hurricane Katrina. We have a number of evacuees that have taken up temporary residence in Smyrna, TN. If you would like to know more about how you can help, please contact me at dailydiablogger@gmail.com and read about how the Smyrna Martial Arts school is taking steps to provide these children a wonderful Christmas. I understand that the Town Center is also taking up donations.

I am also willing to donate my first adsense revenue check to the cause.
