Interesting to say the least

The non-broadcast meeting that our town had on the new proposed ordinances on liquor sales have been reported by the Tennessean and it raised several questions.
"People are going to line up just like they would for (tickets to a big) concert," she said.

Portions of the ordinance that garnered heavy discussion included how to issue certificates of compliance, which allow applicants to obtain a liquor license from the state Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Most council members expressed their preference as being dated and stamped upon submission to the town clerk's office — complete with a $750 application fee to cover zoning and background checks — rather than a lottery.
At least they are honest on the fact that their is a demand from business people to start these businesses. How they will pick the three that will be privileged to start a business might be a lottery.
Councilman H.G. Cole said the lottery system appealed more to him than applicants coming before the council, recalling a time when the council served as the town's beer board.

"I didn't like it. I felt uncomfortable. If they meet the regulations, they have an opportunity to apply," he said.
The article is short of the juicy details that people like me desire, but they did bring up a new requirement that amused me to no end.
A net worth of $100,000 was also put in place to ensure the business owners would have the ability to keep up the store's appearance.

"Liquor is a cash business. Do you want a store that only sells Mad Dog 20/20, Thunderbird and Boone's Farm or a nice, upscale store," Councilman Tim Morrell asked.
Sorry Tim, but I want a store that sells what the people want. So the answer from me to your question is "yes". I do want the people to be able to buy what they desire. By putting an income limit on the store you might be limiting people who have a good business plan, but are just short of the amount the town desires. Sadly they did not broadcast why this 'add-on' was added or the reasoning behind it.

Congrats to the Smyrna bowling team

After a couple of years not making it to the state tournament the Smyrna bowling team will be attending the high school tournament this week at the Smyrna bowling center. I am so very proud of the teams that made it this year. Candy lindsey and the team did a great job in Soddy Daisy today! If you want to attend the tournament this week please feel free to do so. The TSSAA will be holding this event and they do charge to get in to watch but the charge is well worth the excitement! I know that there will be way over 1000 people watching this event. This event starts on Thursday and runs till Sat and the time is 8am till 4 or 5pm. Get there early if your going to attend because you will have to park somewhere and find a good viewing place. Once again WAY TO GO GANG! Good luck at state!!

Taking back our neighborhood.

As many of our readers know by now, there has been some trouble going on in the older parts of town and as I have talked with my neighbors, they seem to feel the same way as I do. We are not going to let these thugs take over our neighborhoods and let them win. I have talked with the Smyrna police dept and we are going to set up a neighborhood watch. They also informed me that they are patrolling more and will be watching everything that is going on. I feel that if these thugs are caught they should be put in jail and made to learn their lessons. As a first time home buyer I am not going to let someone come and destroy my property. I love my home and I am not going anywhere so don't try to make me move. I will be here much longer than you will be! I do know many of the Police officers that work on different shifts and they assured me that they are going to patrolling the area more. If anyone wants to create a neighborhood watch please call city hall and ask to speak with Sgt Gibson and he will talk with you and tell you what you need to do to get this started. He is one of the best police officers around and he will assure you that we can kick this in the butt! I have enjoyed meeting with neighbors that I haven't met yet by phone. Many in this area have been here and settled and don't want things like to happen. We are in strong numbers and we will overcome this.

Will it be televised?

The town council will be meeting in about 30 minutes to discuss the liquor laws and package liquor sales. It starts at 5 PM central time. The meeting is not posted on the town website and it does not look like it has been added to the Channel 3 schedule for online broadcast.

I hope this is an oversight and they do plan to broadcast it. I am hoping that this could be educational on the process that goes into crafting the laws of our town...and I need material for my next column.

Well in 30 minutes I'll find out.

Meeting agenda.

Here is the agenda for the January 29th town council meeting.

Having a Blast in Smyrna!

Last night I heard a loud explosion.

And since there had been gunshots the night before, for a moment I thought "What the heck... is someone throwing pipe bombs now?"

Nope. Just a transformer. Heh.

Neighborhood watch

I just got off the phone with Sgt Gibson and he stated that if if we wanted to start a neighborhood watch in our area we need to find a date and time and he will come out and talk with us all and set this up. He also stated that many people just want the signs posted up which is still a good thing but in this day and time we need to come together and watch each others back. He did tell me that there isnt any evidence that this was a drive by shooting. Also there are not any know gangs that are organized in our city but there are wannabe. Teens that want to be gang members but aren't. If any of you want a meeting with him for the area in concern please leave me a comment or email me at bearroller9640 at yahoo dot com and I will set this up. Let me know either way what you want to do. Either a sign or an actual watch! thanks again for reading This is Smyrna!

Drive-by Incident

There was just a drive-by shooting incident near the old downtown. Two shots were fired out the window of a vehicle before it sped off. No one was hurt. The police were on the scene in record time.

Perhaps it'll be in the news tomorrow. Scary stuff - especially since I heard the shots from my house right next door.

Hope they're caught.

Change in government services.

It looks like the town is posting public notices online differently and they are nice in many ways. They used to post just PDF copies of cut out classified ads from the newspapers, and the quality of the maps were next to impossible to read. Now they are posting the notices in plain type and linking to high quality images of land that will be rezoned. I hope this continues as this is a nice step in getting information out.
CURRENT PUBLIC NOTICES
Three days in advance of the council meeting an agenda will be posted at Town Hall. Copies of agendas will be available for pickup inside Town Hall during regular business hours or downloaded from the main page.

One question puzzled me

When I did the recent police survey so they could get public feedback on their job and our views one question puzzled me. It asked if you knew of certain services and listed a whole slew of them...and one jumped out at me. The Alzheimer's Registration Program was one I had not heard of or could find much information on.

Well my weekly visit to the police website found that they now have this registration open for those who have the need,
The Smyrna Police Department is implementing an Alzheimer's Registration Program for residents who have a family member with this disease.

People with Alzheimer's can wander from a safe environment at any time, or any place and become lost (even in familiar settings). This can become life threatening for that individual.
..............
Anyone wishing to register a loved one who has Alzheimer's may do so by coming to the Smyrna Police Department and completing the Alzheimer's Registration Form. Please bring two (2) different photographs of the individual to be registered. You may also register nationally through the Alzheimer's Association by calling 1-888-572-8566, or on their website at www.alz.org
I'm glad this service is being offered because there really is a need.

School has started

The next few weeks updates on this blog will be fewer from my part of Smyrna. School is back and I need to get started good on this semester. Hopefully some of our co-bloggers can do a few "compost heap" or garden posts. The conversations seem lively on those subjects...much more then I thought they would ever be.

Where?

I had a google alert hit on a Murfreesboro Post article about endangered historical sites in Rutherford county. One was in Smyrna and I cannot seem to find much information on it.
History abounds in Rutherford County and so does development, but they don’t have to be exclusive, the Heritage Foundation of Rutherford County said.
The county has grown exponentially in population and construction in the last 20 years.
.....
With the help of the Heritage Partnership, The Murfreesboro Post has identified the Top 10 (11, because we believe in historic preservation) endangered sites in Rutherford County
....
4. Development also threatens Smyrna’s King House, Carlton said.

Built in the early 1800s as a log house, the building was used as a Confederate hospital and headquarters during the Battle of Stones River.
Where is this structure? Googling the name returns nothing so maybe you fine readers can help.

Cooking shows

During the recent holidays I was exposed to a set of words that brings to mind one of the many reasons that I view television as a land of bread and circuses. A relative said “I saw this recipe on a cooking show and I just had to try it”. My disdain for reality show is followed a close second by cooking shows…very close. It all started with a knife.

I accidentally landed on a cook show years ago and this chef was talking about his knives as he was cooking. He commented on how the knife he was holding cost over $800 and was made of German Steel. That was worth more than the car I drove to work, and my discount purchased knives all had “made in China” on their slightly bent blades. Most humans live in a Wal-Mart supplied kitchen…so should they.

He then put his concoction into his handy food forms for this special dish. Forms that in my entire life I have never had a need for. I went and saw that they cost about $10 each due to a clasp on the side to open after the food “chilled to room temperature”. I figure if my “made in China” stainless steel bowls from Asia are not enough to cook an item, then it doesn’t need to be cooked that bad.

Then there are the items themselves, esoteric spice that you purchase whole bottles for and then use once a year…or never again. My bottle of Orange Zest has been in the cupboard so long it has morphed into “Orange Slow”. Why buy a pound of parsnips to get one ounce for the dish. Most of my spices could be carbon dated they’re so old.

I simply have a dislike for cooking shows because they have separated themselves from the reality of the modern American kitchen. I have a one spice rule in my house. If a new recipe calls for more than one new item…it doesn’t get cooked. Boycott the fairy land cooking shows of America until they learn about the regular American kitchen.

Hungry fish

If you like fishing you might like this news.
Trout release: The next Middle Tennessee area rainbow trout stocking is Friday below Nice Mill in Smyrna.

The West Fork of the Stones River will receive 2,000 fish. The truck bringing the fish usually arrives between 9:30-10:30 a.m., Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officials said.

Many anglers try to be at the site when the fish are dumped.
Nice mill is simply a lovely place to go and relax and to watch the water flow by, so fishing and the scenery makes this event worthy of posting on.

The rescue squad is a volunteer based organization and a real community asset.

Guest column

This is Smyrna is always open for guest columns on many subjects, and sometimes a guest columnist wishes to remain a bit private on their identity...such as this one. Our guest columnist today has written on the subject of court fees.
I’ve been thinking about whether or not to post on this incident… but I think it’s worthy of noting.

A few weeks ago I was pulled over by a police officer. As I hadn’t been doing anything illegal, I didn’t worry about it. Just waited for the officer to walk up.

He did, and informed me that my brake lights weren’t working. Apparently, only the center light on the back windshield was in operation. He wrote me out a citation requiring me to fix the problem… and to provide the department with up-to-date insurance info. My new policy cards were sitting at home on my desk – not yet having been stuck into my wallet or car. Fair enough! I asked him what I needed to do.

He told me that I simply needed to fix the problems and report in at the police station on Enon Springs Rd. to prove my vehicle was back in safe operating condition. I thanked him for letting me know about the issue and I went on my way.

At home I checked my fuses. They worked - as did the bulbs. They just wouldn’t light up. So I took the car to a garage and they fixed it. The wires had burnt through and weren’t carrying current.

With my vehicle back in full working condition, I stopped in at the police station. The clerk there noted my insurance info and told me to use the phone out front to call an officer so he could inspect the car and sign off on its being in good condition. So I did… and he did. And I went back in with the signed paper.

And the clerk said “That’ll be $75.”

“$75?” I replied, incredulous, “I was told that my ticket would be waived if I fixed the issue.”

She replied “Your ticket is waived. The $75 is your court fee.”

“For what? I had to pay to fix my lights… and pay you guys for the privilege of telling me they were broken?”

“That’s the fee.”

So I wrote a check and left. I simply can’t believe that I was charged $75 (which is really precious right now, considering the fact that work has been really hard to find!) by the state. I can understand the ticket and the warning to get it fixed – but to be fleeced by the court is really too much!

Aren’t the cops supposed to prosecute thieves? Should I report this incident to them?
Our guest columns are open to all readers who have a Smyrna based subject they feel needs to be talked about.

Are court costs for no court time proper? Not sure. What's your view?

Think about it

People decry the evils of Bill Gates in daily conversation...but should they?
Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, with about $60 billion in assets each, are America's richest men. With all that money, what can they force us to do? Can they take our house to make room so that another person can build an auto dealership or a casino parking lot? Can they force us to pay money into the government-run retirement Ponzi scheme called Social Security? Can Buffett and Gates force us to bus our children to schools out of our neighborhood in the name of diversity? Unless they are granted power by politicians, rich people have little power to force us to do anything.

A GS-9, or a lowly municipal clerk, has far more life-and-death power over us. It's they to whom we must turn to for permission to build a house, ply a trade, open a restaurant and a myriad of other activities. It's government people, not rich people, who have the power to coerce and make our lives miserable. Coercive power goes a long way toward explaining political corruption.

~Walter Williams column "Rich People vs. Politicians"
Well said.

Great news!

The Smyrna library has announced that they are republishing an important book.
In 1960, Walter King Hoover set out to write the story of Smyrna. Eight years and 559pages later, his book was published.

Only 537 copies of Hoover’s “A History of the Town of Smyrna” were printed. Proud of his town, Hoover sold the books locally and sent them all over the country. But he never did a second printing and if you wanted a copy of the long out-of-print book, it would be hard to come by.

Until now.

This month, the Smyrna Public Library will host a party for the re-release of the book. The party will be from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 23. The Friends of Smyrna Public Library have worked for a year on the reprinting of the book.
This is a hard to get book and one I plan on purchasing. It covers the history of Smyrna in detail and is a type of book I call a 'keeper'.

Alcohol workshop

The town council in their December workshop talked about the need for a special workshop for the issue of alcohol. They tentatively planned it for late January. Sadly because it is a workshop I cannot comment "why the hell is that needed?" and not get thrown out...but maybe it would be worth it this one time.

The first hot issue for me is the requirement that people who own the shops be local residents. Why? Give me a damn good reason why or else don't add that one. Do out of towners smell funny? Sorry La Vergne but your BO is bad? Is this requirement added to all businesses that Smyrna regulates or is it just to ones that are lucrative and money makers? Is alcohol so bad we should should require that out of towners own the businesses to keep our residents pure and clean?

The next is the arbitrary number of 10,000 residents per single store. Why 10,000? Why not 8,398 or 11,491. The one store to every 10,000 people is totally against the free market. A town should have enough stores to meet the need and if there are too many stores then a lack of profit runs some out. The supply grows to meet the need. Basic economics. The market should decide the number, not a government body.

I plan to sit back and enjoy this process with much more glee then I should. I also plan on having more then a few columns on this subject online and in print.

Around town

I have noticed on the entrance way doors of several businesses a sign about a missing teenager. The signs have been up for a few weeks I believe. This might be the youth in question but I'm not sure.
Hayti (Missouri) Police Officers located a 15 year old missing juvenile fro Smyrna, Tenn. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008.

The juvenile was located inside of a residence in the 200 block of East Jefferson, according to officials. Reported missing on Dec. 22, 2008 to the Smyrna Police Department in Tennessee, the juvenile was transported to the Pemiscot County Justice Center where the Smyrna Police Department was contacted.
I hope this is him and he's alright.
