The word for today is...

de-annexation

On the agenda for tonight is a request by a company to have some land de-annexed. I really cannot remember the last time I've seen this request in front of the town council.
Planning Commission Report:i. Consideration of an ordinance relative to the de-annexation of property located on Tax Map 28, part of Parcel 62.02, comprising approximately 2.327 acres, (requested by Mid- South Logistics). Property is located off Chaney Road behind Cedar Grove School. First Reading.
I wonder what reasons they have to leave us.

Help me get home

We have a found lost dog looking for its home.
My wife who is the director of the La Petite here in Smyrna found this puppy outside her building. We are just trying to find his owner. Please let me know if you have any questions and if you can’t do it I understand.
This is the listing on craigslist with images.
Found - Male blue heeler/beagle mix on Hazelwood in Smyrna (Smyrna)...On 2/7/11 I found this sweet little boy that I nicknamed "Little Ricky". If he belongs to you or if you know who he belongs to please send me a message. I would like nothing more than to return him to his rightful owner.
Anyone know little guy?

Comprehensive Plan Public Meeting - February 10, 2011

This looks like something a few of you might be interested in. When Smyrna did their comprehensive plan the turnout for non governmental people was rather lite.

A small edit here. For those who might wish to view this plan they have it posted online here. Enjoy.

Great American Clean Up

Keep America Beautiful is a nation wide effort to keep our communities as lovely as we would want them to be.

Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, takes place annually from March 1 through May 31, involving an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees. The hardworking volunteers donated more than 5.7 million hours in 2010 to clean, beautify and improve more than 33,000 communities during more than 30,000 events in all 50 states and beyond. Activities included beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning seashores and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs and litter-free events.
As part of the local effort the town of Smyrna is holding their 6th annual stream clean up. For anyone who enjoys fishing, boating, or just sitting and watching the stream flow past, this gives you the chance to keep the area the way you would want it to be.

Smyrna Rotary Club

Taylor Loyal of the Smyrna AM did a nice writeup about the history of the Smyrna LaVergne Rotary club.
The Rotary Club, an international service organization with 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide, got its start in Smyrna and La Vergne because one man was on a mission, the charter members explained in the interview. William M. McNeil, a member of the Murfreesboro Rotary Club, went to each prominent business here, sat down with their owners and managers and asked them to help him start a new chapter of the club.
.....
McNeil kept going until he had 36 members by the time the Smyrna Rotary Club was chartered on March 22, 1971. The club had its first meeting on April 24, 1971 at the Stones River Country Club with McNeil as the group's first president.
The Rotary club is well known for their yearly fish fry that brings in several hundred thousand dollars for our community.

The Nissan Battery plant is on schedule.
Construction is progressing on Nissan's manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tenn., which will produce lithium-ion batteries to power the Nissan LEAF zero-emission vehicle. The all-electric Nissan LEAF will be produced at Nissan's vehicle assembly facility in Smyrna beginning in 2012.

The foundation is laid, structure being erected and roof being installed on the vehicle battery manufacturing plant, which at 1.3 million square feet at full capacity will be one of the largest in the country. The battery plant will be capable of producing 200,000 advanced-technology batteries annually. It is located adjacent to Nissan's vehicle assembly plant, which is being retooled to accommodate production of Nissan LEAF and will be capable of producing 150,000 electric cars annually. Combined, Nissan LEAF and battery production will create up to 1,300 U.S. manufacturing jobs when the plants are operating at full capacity
The 1,300 job number looks very nice. I know people have spoken harshly against Nissan for using temp workers and the payouts, but you would be hard pressed to view this in a negative light.
