Crime takes no vacations

Looks like the SPD is after some more individuals. Click for slightly larger images

SPD is trying to identify the pictured suspects in reference to an identity theft and the fraudulent use of a credit card at Staples in Smyrna. The male and female pictured appear to be Hispanic. It is believed that they have used the victim’s information to “clone” a credit card and commit this crime. If anyone can identify them, please contact Detective Jason Anderson at 615.267.5433 or jason.anderson@townofsmyrna.org. (We realize that the picture quality is not optimal, but it is all that is available).

Be on the lookout

Smyrna is NOT a crime ridden community, but it might seem so by the numerous posts about police alerts. I do these to assist the police. They just pop up regularly, and one thing should be noted. Crime travels, and a quick drive from Nashville to here to commit a crime is not out of the realm of possibilities.

COUNTERFEIT MONEY - RECOGNIZE THESE SUSPECTS?
On 01/23/2016, these suspects passed counterfeit $50 dollar bills at Wal-Mart. Suspect one was a white male wearing a tan Native American style jacket with fringe on it. Suspect two was a white female wearing a camouflage jacket. They may be driving a dark colored, 4 door car.
Anyone with information regarding the identity of these suspects is asked to contact Detective Rick Hall at (615) 267-5012 or (615)459-6644.

The Town of Smyrna along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is teaming up for the 2016 PrepareAthon. America’s PrepareAthon! is a national, grassroots campaign to increase individual and community preparedness and strength through hazard-specific drills, group discussions, and exercises. Throughout the year, schools, universities, houses of worship, businesses, and civic organizations across the country are organizing PrepareAthon Days in their communities to discuss, practice, and train for relevant hazards. These events and activities often happen at times when disasters are most likely to occur, or in conjunction with existing events, or weather awareness weeks.
The Town of Smyrna hopes that this PrepareAthon will help citizens' families, work places, schools, houses of worship and community organizations to take the steps needed to be prepared in the event of a tornado and/or flood disaster.  Emergency preparedness is every citizen’s responsibility.

SMYRNA, Tenn. – In honor of Black History Month, the Historic Sam Davis Home is hosting special, free talks on Saturday, February 20 and Saturday, February 27, 2016

At 1:00 pm on each date, guests will hear Layhew speak on “The Long Road: The Civil Rights Movement in Tennessee, 1860’s-1960’s”. The talk will highlight the work of Ida B. Wells, the Highlander Folk School, the sit-in protests in Middle Tennessee, and the early African American legislators.
In addition to these two special events, SDH invites guests to visit the permanent exhibit “Recovering Their Story: African Americans on the Davis Plantation, 1850-1925” and take a guided tour of the historic home and grounds. Enhance this!

I want a minivan. A nice one. Heck. I want one that has those doors that you slide just an inch or so and they auto-shut their self. That would be so cool.

I do have one problem. I simply cannot get the money together to buy one as soon as I want, so I have an idea. I'm planning on building a nice Jacuzzi, and a minivan would look nice in the driveway. So. I and my wife will get raises. I'm not going to ask the boss as they might say 'no'. I'll skip them and go to HR. That'll work just fine.

Sounds wrong. That is how I see the local town government here and their recent way of saying they want more money to work on roads.

The government is one of the few organizations that can get a raise without asking their bosses...we call them voters. They skip the voters and go right to the State government and ask for income enhancements. A nice way of saying tax increase.

If I don't have the money to buy something, than how does it look to us the voters when the government is planning on 'improving' the local town centre, yet has a need for road funds. This is called messed up priorities. It's also called an election year.

If the road is so darn important, so dangerous, then you DON'T spend the money on a better pool or nature center, but on the roads. It sounds simplistic, but there it is.

What is really bothering me is the two fold game of words. They are using the phrase "enhanced" instead of the more honest "increased", and they also are not letting the citizens decide. I understand that you can go talk to the council, but I have only seen one time I feel that someone pointed out how bad an ordinance change would be, and they voted it down due to the voice of the people.

Please email the council at the addresses linked here and let them know you would rather have safe roads over an interactive show on wildlife and a pool. Also ask them to please use the correct term as that is making them all look bad.

Emma

Springhouse Theatre Company is putting on a performance of Jane Austin's Emma. A romantic comedy. It starts tomorrow, the 12th and runs until the 28th.

Emma, by Jane Austen, is a novel about youthful hubris and the perils of misconstrued romance. The novel was first published in December 1815. As in her other novels, Austen explores the concerns and difficulties of genteel women living in Georgian-Regency England; she also creates a lively comedy of manners among her characters.
Before she began the novel, Austen wrote, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like."In the first sentence she introduces the title character as "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich." Emma is spoiled, headstrong, and self-satisfied; she greatly overestimates her own matchmaking abilities; she is blind to the dangers of meddling in other people's lives; and her imagination and perceptions often lead her astray. (From wikipedia)

Tickets are still available, and is a nice way to enjoy the arts and be part of supporting the growing artistic community in Smyrna.

They want to hear from you

Almost everyone has that spot in Smyrna. Where the traffic always seems to slow, and it looks like the lights/streets/lanes are almost made to upset you. Well now you can take a moment and point directly at that spot and let the Town Government of Smyrna know your feelings.

They have set up a public online spot where your voice should, or at least could, be heard.

Welcome to Smyrna's Transportation Plan public forum. We need your input! Please take this opportunity to tell us where we can improve on issues such as safety, congestion, bicycle and pedestrian travel, transit needs, and other transportation issues or concerns. Thank you!

I figure a close up of the towns favorite source of complaints it seems would fit in nicely, so here is Sam Ridley Pkwy.

Right now they have a workshop scheduled for 2/22 to address these issues.

The Smyrna Town Council and the Planning Commission will hold a joint workshop to discuss the Major Thoroughfare Plan and Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan updates.

They also have a survey for you to take if you wish to let them know your feeling in a little more depth.

COOKIES!!!!

I try to limit ads on This is Smyrna to going out of business sales, grand openings, and charity events...but I do feel one exception will be allowed. GIRL SCOUT COOKIES!!! Do you have a child selling cookies and want people to know about it, then comment here and hopefully some readers will drop by to buy some. I should note that I do not have any children involved in the scouts, but those cookies are so good that they border on sinful.
