Independence Day in Smyrna

Summer camp changes

An update from Sam Davis home. With the sad crash of the Blue Angel jet, the schedules for many events had to be moved around.

Our Summer Camps have officially been rescheduled and registration reopened! Visit http://samdavishome.org/Summer-Camps for more information! ‪#‎summercamps

I hope this does not mess up any family plans.

July's Movie in the Park

The Smyrna Parks and Recreation for the month of July has Zootopia as their Movie in the Park. That looks like a fun movie.
The event is Friday July 29th at Dusk. I will have a reminder going up a few days before the event.

Fireworks.

The Town of Smyrna posted a few days ago on Face Book a reminder of fireworks ordinances. My view can best be said in a sarcastic reply on another forum about these laws.
"Celebrate freedom with traditional fireworks within these narrow time frames, with pre-approved and heavily regulated fireworks, in specific non residential areas in some cases on specific dates ONLY...or the authorities will be called. FREEDOM!!!!! Please do not yell 'freedom' overly loud due to noise ordinances. Thank you for celebrating your freedom in the government approved and allowed manner. See you next year."
I understand the issues of kids, vets, pets, etc I also see this as a yearly small event that we can live with. I guess as I grow older I get more grumpy about what I call, the bubble wrapped generation.

Stories in Motion

The public library should be your go to place for activities this summer. It's not just a place to find great books and educational material, but it also offers special events like this one. Stories in Motion is described as...
Dance into your favorite stories! Do funny snow walks with Peter in “The Snowy Day,” swoop through the trees in “Owl Moon,” explore the forest with “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” join in the rumpus in “Where the Wild Things Are,” enter the magical land of “Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe,” and many more. Have fun bringing literature to life!
Stories in motion is being offered up as a special event at the Smyrna Public Library this coming Wednesday on June 29 at 10 AM. It will be taught by Loren Freed and it looks like it will be both fun and entertaining.

All ages are welcome

Groups of Interest

Earlier this month the group of interest was the Smyrna Pets, Lost & Found. A nice group, but not all of our readers live in Smyrna proper, so some of you might find it easier to look at today's group.

Rutherford County Tennessee Lost and Found Animals is for the whole county, and likely has a wider range of viewers to assist you in finding your lost pet, or helping you find the owner of a pet you rescued.

Their mission statement says it all.
To be the voices of our helpless animals. Helping them find their way back home and offer assistance to those looking for their furbabies with the communities help. "We are their only voice".
I hope this helps you.

Ham Radio Field Day tomorrow

This is something happening in Smyrna. A 24 hour Ham Field Day run by the Stones River Amateur Radio Club and Rutherford County ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency service).

The event will be at the TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center and will run from June 25 at 11:59 AM to June 26 at 11:59 AM. An overnight field day.

Field Day 2016
Members of the Stones River Amateur Radio Club, in conjunction with Rutherford ARES, will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, June 25 – 26 from the property of Stone Crest Medical Center, 200 Stone Crest Boulevard, Smyrna, TN 37167.  Setup will include the Rutherford County ARES communications trailer.

ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air eventheld annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN! It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, other groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities. It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar. The contest part is simply to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate our radio gear in abnormal situations and less than optimal conditions. We use these same skills when we help with events such as marathons and bike-a-thons; fund-raisers such as walk-a-thons; celebrations such as parades; and exhibits at fairs, malls and museums — these are all large, preplanned, non-emergency activities. But despite the development of very complex, modern communications systems — or maybe because they ARE so complex — ham radio has been called into action again and again to provide communications in crises when it really matters. Amateur Radio people (also called “hams”) are well known for our communications support in real disaster and post-disaster situations.

Help the Smyrna police

The Smyrna police could use your help. I was looking at some cash amazed how the holograph like strip would make it next to impossible to counterfeit them. I guess I was wrong.

On 05/12/16, three black males entered the Wal Mart in Smyrna and purchased approximately $1,250.00 worth of electronics using counterfeit bills. They left the store and drove away in a dark colored SUV. They are currently wanted for questioning. Anyone with information should contact Detective Robert Monroe at 615-267-5455.

Trains!!!!

This is something your children might like to look at if they're into trains, or just fun things in general. The Smyrna Public Library is hosting for 2 days a train display and everyone is invited.

NTRAK model trains will be on display in the conference room June 25-26 from 9-5.
All ages welcome.
Please note that the library will be closed on Sunday, June 26, except for the display.
I'll admit that I had no idea what an NTRAK model was, so I went to WIKI and they said this...
NTrak is one of several model railroad module standards. It is the most popular standard for use in United States N scale. NTrak allows modellers to participate in a large layout but only invest a small amount of space at their own home. They can interchange their module with any club or group that follows NTrak standards.

Can you offer a little time and labor for a good cause?

The Rotary club of Smyrna Tennessee is having a major event for the good of the community. They need your help for the Rotary Volunteers for Mobile Food Pantry, and you can help make a difference.

Saturday, June 25 at 8 AM - 12 PM
Volunteers are needed to help unload the truck and distribute food. Rotary of Smyrna's donation is making this happen
Mobile Pantries are large-scale, one-day distributions in which food items are delivered by Second Harvest to a designated location for immediate distribution to those in need by a Partner Agency. Many Partner Agencies do not have the physical space appropriate for handling large amounts of food or may not be located in a neighborhood easily accessible by those in need. With a Mobile Pantry, food is brought to underserved communities without these barriers and as many as 250-300 households are provided with several days worth of food within a 2-4 hour period of time. The truck arrives at 8 a.m. and food will be distributed from 9 a.m. until about Noon.

Groups of Interest in Smyrna

Charity begins at home, but should not end there. Thomas Fuller

Smyrna has one of the better small town Food Banks that I have seen. The Smyrna-LaVergne Food Bank (FaceBook Link). They are active and they offer help through simple kindness. With that said, I highly recommend that you take a moment and read about this fine group of people.

Our Mission
We pledge our services to feed as many hungry people in our community as we are able, and to make the residents of Smyrna and La Vergne aware of the need for food assistance by their neighbors.
Our Work
The Smyrna-La Vergne Food Bank (SLFB) has been working to end hunger and build up a community response to food insecurity for more than 30 years. Last year alone, we provided more than 74,000 meals worth of food products to families in economic and food crisis across our service communities.

Each client receives a grocery cart full of food consisting of perishable and non-perishable items such as milk, eggs, bread, meat, cheese, baby food and diapers, canned and fresh fruits and vegetables, and even pastries and snacks. We are the community-based distributor for federal commodities, operate an Emergency Food and Shelter Program, and even provide personal care items like shampoo, toothpaste, adult sanitary products and more.

Hunger and food insecurity are often not the only challenges our clients face. Many of our clients lack the skills or education necessary to gain or retain employment, and many of those employed work for wages far below sustainability levels for their families. We often refer our clients to GED, ESL and adult reading classes, along with referrals to financial counseling, utilities and rental assistance, insurance access and other community-based resources. Our goal is to reduce the number of families needing emergency food by working together with other agencies to provide the education, skill sets, and supportive resources needed to help transition our clients out of the cycle of poverty and into independence and sustainability.
The last part where they say "We often refer our clients to GED, ESL and adult reading classes, along with referrals to financial counseling, utilities and rental assistance, insurance access and other community-based resources.". This is the truest meaning of the term 'giving them a hand up'.

Groups of Interest

Today's Groups of Interest is Volunteer Rutherford. They are a group that gives you event information, but also tries to show you the many places and causes that you can individually or as a family take part in helping.

Our mission is to build a stronger community through encouraging volunteer service and helping connect the citizens of Rutherford County to opportunities in which they can meet critical needs and make a difference.
The Volunteer Rutherford website is the most comprehensive resource of charitable organizations in Rutherford County. In addition to a listing of charities and service organizations to connect residents to service that matters to them, the site also has listings of current donation/volunteer needs, non-profit events and a page to celebrate those who serve through our Volunteer of the Week program.
Volunteer Rutherford is an independent company that has no official affiliation with any specific non-profit organization.  All information on this site is being provided for infomational purposes only.  Please confirm all information with each individual organization and be sure to confirm accuracy of events with the organizations before attending.
While we will have listings of fundraising events on our event calendar, the Volunteer Rutherford website and FB page are focused strictly on volunteerism and NO DIRECT FINANCIAL ASKS are allowed on the website or FB page.

Boat Day & Waterfest Service Project

Another nice event is coming up in a few days and it looks like fun. For kids that have never gone out on the water, this would make for a great day...and it is free. Free is almost always good.

This Rotary Club has helped with logistics for this event for sereral years. Volunteers help with check in, fitting life jackets, and help people in and out of boats. The following is a brief descrtiption:
"Citizens of all ages are encouraged to visit the water quality and boat safety exhibits and enjoy the tranquil lake water in either a canoe or kayak, or both. Canoes, kayaks, paddles and life jackets will be available, and life jackets are required to be worn. All young children must be accompanied by an adult on all boats. This event is FREE! "

I'm not sure which movie it is, so I guess you'll need to go to find out. Ha. The old bait and switch. You go for a movie, they trick you into getting books and bettering your self. So dastardly.

Guess our new Neighbor

My friend just posted on his Facebook page a picture of a sign up near Lowe's. It simply reads T.J.Max. Coming Soon. Of course it is going in on the Sam Ridley Strip, but it is growth, new jobs and a small sign that we can still draw in big businesses.

Assist the Smyrna Police.

On 6/5/16, the pictured female used a cloned credit card to defraud the victim of over $400.00 in cash. The suspect is seen driving away in a silver, early 2000’s Ford Taurus. If anyone can help identify this suspect, please contact Det. Anderson at 615.267.5433.

Help the Smyrna Police

The Smyrna Police Department seeks the assistance of the public identifying a person of interest. On 05/25/2016 at approximately 2:28pm, a female entered a store on Sam Ridley and used a cloned Visa card to purchase gift cards and other merchandise. Group of Interest in Smyrna

Most people know there is a Senior Citizen Center in Smyrna, but most people do not know how much happens there. This is not some group of elderly people just sitting around, but a center that has regular activities, food and trips.

This image shows you just one trip that have arranged for their members,

They also regularly have open houses, auctions for charities and community meals there. To much to put in one post, but you really should check them out as this is what they offer.

The Smyrna Senior Citizens Center stays very busy with various activities that our members take part in each week including Bingo, Dominoes, Ceramics, Bridge, Watercolor, Quilting, Arts & Crafts, Sign Language, Bible Study, Walking, Exercise and Line Dancing.  We have speakers come in several times a month to talk about various subjects and issues that Seniors are interested in.  Our fun extends outside of the Center as well.  Each month, we all come together for a monthly meeting that includes a potluck meal and entertainment. As often as we can, we load our 15 passenger bus for day trips to area attractions throughout Tennessee, go shopping and always to go eat lunch.  We also go on overnight trips that last anywhere from one night to two weeks.  We have visited great places like Colorado, New Orleans, Savannah, Niagara Falls, Myrtle Beach, Tunica/Memphis and Albuquerque.  We have also been on an Alaskan Cruise.

Summer Concert Series

The 2016 Summer Concert Series starts soon and the first band is Stretta. The schedule event will happen at the Town Centre on 100 Sam Ridley Parkway E.

Music starts at 6:30pm on June 10th and is a Free Event! Free is good.

Tribute

Yesterday in our town, a member of the Blue Angels flying team crashed and lost his life. This poem came to mind.

High Flight

John Gillespie Magee, Jr

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
