TWO POLICE ALERTS TODAY

ALERT 1

FATALITY SUSPECT IDENTIFIED – WARRANTS ON FILE
On July 10, 2016, Smyrna Police Department investigated a fatal hit-and- run accident. The victim was identified as 29 year old Elise Denton, who was struck by another vehicle while riding her Honda Scooter on South Lowry Street near the Nissan overpass. Denton’s body was left behind in the roadway as the suspect left the scene and continued north bound on Lowry Street.
According to witness statements, the suspect vehicle dragged Denton’s scooter for approximately one quarter of a mile before the driver stopped, got out and removed the wreckage from underneath the vehicle. The driver then fled the vicinity and was last seen in the area of Eastland Drive and Stewart Drive in Smyrna.
Based on a tip, the SPD Criminal Investigations Division recovered the suspect vehicle on July 12, 2016. The investigation conducted by SPD, along with the assistance of the Rutherford County District Attorney’s office, has identified the suspect as 25 year old Cortney Barrett of Murfreesboro, TN.
A warrant for Barrett’s arrest has been issued. She is being charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death. Other charges are pending. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the Smyrna Police Department at 615-459-6644.

Information on local candidates

A small section of Smyrna is in the 34th District for the State of Tennessee legislation. Not all readers are technically in Smyrna, and some are in this area, I thought you might find this article from the Murfreesboro Post worth reading. They sent out a questionnaire and put it online for your reading enjoyment.

Four Republicans and one Democrat are running for the 34th District House seat being vacated by Republican state Rep. Rick Womick of Rockvale.
As early voting approaches July 15-30 and Election Day on Aug. 4 in the state primary, the candidates answered these questions from The Post.
Early voting has started. so if you're inclined to vote, now is the time.

Sessions Judge for Rutherford County.

Early voting has started and there are several races going on this year. One is for the position of a new sessions Judge. Here is a good DNJ article on the ones that responded to a questionnaire. We don't take one over the other, but we do hope you make an informed choice and take the time to go vote. Thanks.

On Aug. 4, voters will decide who will serve as Rutherford County's fourth general sessions judge.
The position was created by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly this spring to take on some of the criminal caseload at the behest of County Mayor Ernest Burgess and the three existing general sessions judges.
Early voting has started today, so if you have time and a candidate you like, go vote please.

Family Water Day next week

New Gear for the SPD

A newspaper article was brought to my attention by Google news alerts. It seems that the Smyrna Police Department is upgrading their rifles. This is not a new rifle, it is a modular system to improve the abilities of what they already have. It is best described as new gear.
“We conducted a thorough review of a variety of chassis systems to replace our aging Remington Model 700 stocks,” said Cpl Gary Schoon of the Town of Smyrna Police Department. “The MOD*X GEN III gave us a lightweight, ergonomic chassis to upgrade our Remington Model 700’s.

This impresses me in so many ways. Instead of purchasing all new firearms to get the latest and coolest bang for our tax bucks, they simply upgraded what they had.

PLEASE help the SPD on this one.

This is the ultimate of callousness. To leave a victim to die.

WE NEED YOUR HELP LOCATING A HIT AND RUN SUSPECT
Last night (7/10/16), at approximately 10:45 pm, Smyrna Police responded to a crash in the area of South Lowry Street at the Nissan Boulevard overpass. The investigation revealed that a Honda scooter was travelling north on Lowry Street when it was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The scooter operator was knocked off of the scooter and struck by another vehicle. The scooter was dragged by the truck approximately ¼ mile to Stewart Drive when the truck left the roadway and struck an embankment. The suspect driver freed the scooter from the truck and left the scene.
The driver of the scooter was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center for treatment but was declared deceased shortly after arrival. She has been identified as Elise Denton (29) of Nashville and her family has been notified.
The suspect vehicle is believed to be a dark grey or pewter colored Chevrolet or GMC pickup truck. The truck should have damage to the front end and should be missing a driver-side headlight. White paint transfer from the scooter may also be present. We urge anyone with information regarding the suspect vehicle or the suspect driver to please contact Smyrna Police at 615-459-6644.

Woman's Self Defense R.A.D.

Rape Aggression Defense Courses

The dates for our Summer classes: July 20th, 21st, 27th and 28th from 6pm-9pm!

R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) is a “women only” self-defense program designed to enhance a woman’s natural desire to RESIST rape/aggression as well as enhance the human natural “fight of flight” response when dealing with aggression.  The entire 12 hour course is broken down into 4 separate, 3 hour classes.  The course not only teaches women techniques for physical defense but also teaches women techniques to prevent a potential attack through “situational awareness” of their surroundings and trusting their “sixth sense” when it is warning her of danger.  Students in the class will have the opportunity to test their newly learned skills in a controlled environment during a training simulation with a trained aggressor.  The minimum age for this course is 12 years and there is not maximum age limit.  You may go to http://www.rad-systems.com/ to learn more about the RAD curriculum.

The dates for the next available sessions are July 20, 21, 27 and 28 (Wednesday and Thursday nights) from 6 pm – 9 pm
.
Mother/daughter student teams are strongly encouraged.
Minimum age is 12 years old without a maximum age for participation.Juvenile students will need a parent/guardian release.
Cost for the class is $25.00 per household.
For more information about the RAD system of self-defense, you may go to www.rad-systems.com
Anyone interested in taking the class should contact Sgt. Bobby Gibson at (615) 459-9742, ext. 2536 or via email
