Recreation and Reading
We’re kicking off Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center’s Recreation and Reading Program—a program designed to get everyone active AND actively reading! At each “Recreational Reading” Program, we will read, create, and play.
Today’s two-hour program is all about astronauts. We will have an interactive read-aloud, create a craft related to our book, and then go out in the park and train like an astronaut (so be sure to wear your tennis shoes). Anyone and everyone is encouraged to attend—regardless of age, reading ability, or physical agility.

One good thing about Smyrna is the fact there are people active to keep the history alive in Smyrna. One of these groups are the Friends of the Johns-King House (Liberty Hill)Drop by and see what is happening to this historical site.
Welcome to the Friends of the Johns-King House. Built in 1807 by prominent Tennessee political figure - Col. Robert Weakley, (Weakley County TN). The historic Johns-King Home is likely the oldest surviving private home in modern day Smyrna, TN. The house was a witness structure to the Cherokee Trail of Tears of 1838, and a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. The Friends of the Johns-King House is a Tennessee state chartered non-profit organization, formed for the purpose of promoting the purchase, restoration, and preservation of the property as an educational resource and to encourage the future development of this very historic home as a historical interpretive center for northern Rutherford County and Smyrna TN.

We have added another school to get weekend food! If you aren't familiar with this, many local schools have students that rely on food from school during the week, so on the weekend they might go without or not get enough. We supply individual bags that they can take home on Fridays, with food for the whole weekend. No child should have to go hungry!
We are planning on having our annual yard sale fundraiser soon, and are accepting items for it now. It's always a huge one, with a great turnout. If you have any items you would like to give for our sale, please let us know.This is really a group more poeple should know about. Even if you can only donate items for their yardsale, know that every little bit helps.
Remember, every dollar will go to help local families in need!

The Smyrna Police has a self defense class planned that you might be interested in for the ladies.WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE CLASS
The Smyrna Police Department will be hosting a women’s self–defense class in January. This class is for women only and it is based on the
RAD-SYSTEM of self-defense. RAD (RAPE, AGGRESSION and DEFENSE) is a self-defense program designed to enhance a woman’s natural desire to RESIST rape/aggression as well as enhance the human natural “fight or flight” response when dealing with aggression. The entire 12 hour course is broken down into 4 separate, 3 hour classes. The course is designed to teach students techniques for physical defense as well as techniques for preventing a potential attack through “situational awareness” and trusting their “sixth sense.” Women will also have the opportunity to test their newly learned skills in a controlled environment during a training simulation with an aggressor.
• The dates for the class are May 17th, 18th, 24th and 25th (Tuesday and Wednesday nights) from 6 pm – 9 pm.
• Mother/daughter student teams are strongly encouraged.
• Minimum age is 12 years old without a maximum age for participation. Juvenile students will need a parent/guardian release.
• Cost for the class is $25.00 per household.

THEFT OF TRAILER
On 05/02/2016, an unknown white male stole a trailer from Tennessee Awning on South Lowry Street. The suspect was driving a red and white, small S-10 pickup truck with custom wheels on it. It also appears to have what looks like lawn mowers in the back of it. The suspect was wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information regarding this theft is asked to contact Detective Rick Hall (615) 267-5012
Ministry in Motion, Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital’s Mobile Health Unit, is a part of Saint Thomas' mission to help serve the poor and improve the health of disadvantaged individuals and communities. It exists to help provide healthcare to individuals who can not afford it. A faith based institution, Saint Thomas is driven by its Christian principles to help serve those in need.

Lowry Street Gateway Strip commercial development dominates the Lowry Street corridor. The numerous driveways, haphazard signage, and scattered parking lots create a chaotic atmosphere. This corridor is important because it is the gateway to the heart of Smyrna and leads to its historic center. Most users enter from the north from the Sam Ridley Parkway interchange or directly along Lowry Street. The Lowry Street gateway should accomplish the following objectives:
Signal to drivers on Sam Ridley Parkway that they are passing over an important gateway and provide information to direct them to the heart of the town.
Create a defined gateway at the Sam Ridley Parkway overpass announcing to motorist traveling south on Murfreesboro Road that they have entered the gateway to the heart of Smyrna.
Establish a streetscape that promotes pedestrian activity.
Extend the greenway system and provide connection to future Sam Ridley Parkway multi-use trail. Create a more aesthetically appealing and consistent environment that reinforces the identity of the are
