Aftermath of a storm

Gas prices have risen forty cents a gallon in Smyrna since Monday.

As I drove past the Kroger gas on my way home, I noticed no cars there...a bit unusual since cars are usually lined up two deep and they were five deep on Monday. There were orange cones at each station, making me think they ran out of gasoline in the tanks. I've heard a rumor going around that due to the disruption of shipments and oil prices we could run out of gas by this weekend at stations in the area. Again, that is just rumor and I don't know it to be true.

Our prayers are needed for those families who have lost so much. Many of them may be staying in our area, having fled the devestation. And don't forget there are a lot of relief operations set up to take donations for assistance. And let us also not forget that it's not just now that people will need our help--it will be needed in the days and weeks to come.

Tropical Storm Katrina

Tropical storm Katrina is affecting middle Tennessee and Smyrna today. Lots of rain, tornado warnings and potential flooding are just some of the things that we can expect to see today.

Rutherford County schools have closed for the day.

For a list of other closings and coverage of the storm, you can surf over to Channel 2's web site which has special coverage.

If you'd like to make a donation to help out with relief and recovery from the storm, you can do as the Red Cross's web site.

Get Out of Our Town!

In case you hadn't heard, Saturday was a pretty unusual day in the town of Smyrna, Tn (read Wednesday, August 24, 2005 -News :: Smyrna, TN Soldier's Funeral May Turn Into Circus)...

According to the story published here, citizens had comments such as this:

"If they were protesting the government, I might even join them," Danny Cotton, 56, said amid cries of "get out of our town" and "get out of our country."

Read up on the full details here.

This story was also written about here and on BigOrangeMichael.

Innovation :: A Look Into the Future

Have you checked out my other sites we love section? Most likely not. I can't let another post go by without bringing these links to your attention. I'll select my favorite innovations. First, we'll start with the monolithic dome.

Travel to certain parts of the country and you may see things dome homes in some communities. In Smyrna, TN, however, I think it would be cause for front page news... Dome construction is not only more sturdy than regular contstruction but can also be more energy efficient, allowing for greater circulation throughout the house. If you've never considered an alternative home building idea, this one begs for attention. Dome construction is most likely not for everyone but it is a great start at "thinking outside the box".

Next, the skycar... All I can say is, I want one! Now! The price tag, last I checked, was well over 200k... Don't think I'll be buying one anytime soon but if ever I were to win millions in the lottery, rest assured, I'd have my skycar parked right next to my dome home, in its own dome hanger, of course.

Finally, another one of my favorites is the litter kwitter. Seen the movie Meet the Fokkers? Think it would be cool to teach your cat to use the toilet? Oh, yeah! Again, the price tag is a bit hefty right now but I am hoping that they'll begin distribution in the U.S. before long cutting down on such a heavy price tag. I'm so ready to ditch the litter box.

How about you? Any favorites? Are there any innovators in the town of Smyrna, TN? Comment me and let me know about your product! Perhaps we'll feature it here.

News :: Smyrna, TN Soldier's Funeral May Turn Into Circus

Reports have it that Pastor Fred Phelps, a Baptist minister from Kansas (tip of the hat to Bigorangemichael), will be in the town of Smyrna, TN on Saturday to protest the war in Iraq at none other than the funeral of a local citizen and soldier who lost his life three weeks ago with two other Tennesseans. Pastor Phelps' message include slogans like "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" and believes that men and women are dying because of God's wrath and vengeance for America's "acceptance of homosexuality."

Regardless of your position, it seems to me that most people would agree that this kind of lunacy is completely inappropriate and can only diminish the credibility of this Pastor and his followers.

To further complicate the matter, Bigorangemichael reports:
Local conservative talk show host, Steve Gill caught wind of this and this morning took to the airwaves calling on the Southern Baptist convention to condemn Phelps' actions and to rally a group to go out and protest Phelps' protesters. From what I caught of Gill's rhetoric, he'd like to have 1,000 listeners out Saturday to show support.
So, all eyes on Smyrna, TN this weekend. Perhaps the people of Smyrna, TN can give the families peace during their time of grief. I, for one, will not be looking for a story at this event.

Restaurant Reviews:: Cozumel Restaurante Mexicano

Cozumel Mexican Restaurant located at 277 North Lowery in Smyrna, TN is one of my favorite Mexican Restaurants. You can always be sure to get large portions and the food is great. Try their chicken taco salad (among other fines menu items). Green peppers, onions, seasoned chicken, guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes and of course, cheese all in a shell. Yum.

I'd also like to say that Hector was a fine waiter. He took great pride in his work as was obvious with the way that he bagged chips. You are probably asking yourself - how in the world could bagging chips demonstrate that someone takes pride in their work? You'll have to see for yourself.

Anyway, for great Mexican food at a fair price, you should visit

Restuarant Review: Breaking Bread

While I have the privilege of living in the great city of Smyrna, TN, alas, I must admit I don't work there. For me, the biggest negative of this is that since I work in downtown Nashville, I am too far away to commute down to have lunch at the Breaking Bread on the town square in Smyrna. (But believe me, this thought has crossed my mind on numerous occasions...I just don't think my bosses would go for a two hour lunch..)

When I first moved up to Smryna, my parents took me to Breaking Bread for their Saturday morning, all you can eat breakfast. For a mere $7, you get pancakes, eggs (cooked how you want them), thick, crispy bacon, sausage, a chicken nugget, grits, hashbrowns, biscuit and gravy and your drink.

You walk in, take a seat and the always kind staff takes your drink order and asks how you want your eggs. Then, food starts hitting the table. You get one serving of each item to start with and can request refills if you want more. Let me just say this--Breaking Bread has Shoney's breakfast buffet beat hands-down. The food is great, the service is always beyond measure and the value is great. I've been on numerous occasions, taken friends there who have visited from out of town and the conclusion is always the same--Breaking Bread's Saturday morning breakfast is great.

Breakfast is served Saturday mornings until 11 a.m. (I forget what time it starts...I want to say 7 or 8 a.m. but I'm not sure). If you've not tried it yet, come hungry. Forget the Adkins or South Beach diet and just enjoy a good, hearty country breakfast.

I also know that Breaking Bread serves breakfast off the menu Monday through Friday and lunch and dinner five-days a week. I've not yet been able to try any of their other food, but if it's half as good as the Saturday morning breakfast, then it will be superb.

Definitely recommended.

News :: Missing Person

8/20/2005 - Sadly, Latoyia's remains were found approximately 13 miles from where she went missing.

I know this is not Smyrna, TN news but as someone who briefly experienced the anguish and fear of having a loved one go missing, even if only for two and a half hours, I gladly post this information and would hope that if ever I should be in the same situation, someone in another state or locale would do the same in return.

Pictured left is Latoyia Figueroa (picture from goddessofmanynames.blogspot.com). Latoyia is 25 years old, black female and PREGNANT. She has been missing from her Philadelphia home since 7/18/05.

If you have any information, call the Citizen's Crime Commission at:

Visit Richard Cranium's website to learn more about the Latoyia Figueroa reward fund. Kudos to Richard for his efforts.
