A total of 775 Tennessee workers, including 681 in Smyrna, have accepted buyout offers from Nissan North America, company officials announced Friday morning. While 681 may not be a big number compared to the cities 30,000 population, the plant only employees 6500. It is over 10 percent of the work force.
Employees who accepted the offers will receive a $45,000 lump sum payment plus $500 per year of service. Those who accepted must leave the company by June 30.
Luckily Smyrna is not a one industry town. The mix of industry workers and commuters for Nashville gives Smyrna a strength other cities do not enjoy.
