7th Annual Smyrna Fire Department Food Drive

The Smyrna Fire department is having a food drive for the Smyrna/LaVergne food bank. I hope you understand how important this service is to our town and how much good it does. The Daily news Journal has an article on how the economy is hurting their supplies of food.
The Smyrna-La Vergne Food Bank saw a 30 percent increase in applications in September 2008 compared to the previous year, according to Denise Esker, director of the food bank in Smyrna. Earlier this month, 10 families applied for help for the first time in the same day.

"Denise is the greatest person in the world," said Dan Fedele. "Even though I showed up an hour late she took care of me right then."

The Smyrna-La Vergne Food Bank has been providing food to needy families since 1982 and is one of 47 agencies and programs supported by the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties.

The food bank depends heavily on donations of nonperishable food through area food drives to stock its shelves.
I'm one who feels this economic turmoil we are suffering is not going to end soon, so we need to do what we can to voluntarily help others.

Take a little money and go check out the sales at ALDI's or some other place and do what you can. Be a good neighbor. Also for those who shop at Krogers. They have a small bundle of food items that you can purchase for 5$(If I remember correctly) that goes right to the food bank also.

Thanks for letting us know. I didn't know they needed help. We'll have to fix that! Folks are certainly going to be suffering as things tighten.
