About that Bookstore...

As we head into Depression Pt. II, I'm starting to wonder if we'll actually get a Books-A-Million in town.

Anyone else see their share prices lately?

Guess we can still hit the library if BAM doesn't pull through.

And who knows, I may be proven wrong.

I hope so - I want books, darn it!

UPDATE: Books-A-Million just posted their third quarter results. Not good:

Wow, I hope we still do. I've been desperately wanting a book store ever since I moved to Smyrna ten years ago (yeah, I was a 14 year old desperately wanting a bookstore). It would be really disappointing if it fell through. I mean, it's really a shame to be a city this size without a bookstore.

And I work at the library! We don't mind the 'competition' at all.

I'm with you. I'm a total bibliophile. Heck, I don't even have a TV! (Though I'm wishing I could watch the Titans this season...) Right now I'm reading "Slaughterhouse 5," "Intellectuals," "The Prince," and "America's Great Depression" concurrently. Yeah... bit of a book nut. ;)

Unfortunately, over the past five years as I've researched the inevitable results of the inflationary boom and bust cycle, I'm getting cynical. I think a lot of the current construction and expansion projects are "walking dead." Things aren't looking so hot for anything retail. (Except guns and gold, for some reason).

Honestly, though - I really do hope we get a bookstore.

She's right, we don't! :-D In fact, I think we're all excited about the prospect of a Smyrna bookstore. The Murfreesboro bookstores partner beautifully with the Linebaugh system, and I think it would be great to have that kind of local relationship. I'm crossing my fingers!

I just finished Turkels "Hard Times" on the depression and it was an eye opener.

The people that were developing the Smyrna Commons (Near Nissan) sold the land to another developer so that project is now in question.

I haven't read "Hard Times," but Murray Rothbard's "America's Great Depression" is fantastic.

As for the sale, I'm not surprised. In the bust phase, malinvestments are liquidated. And even good projects get halted as people race for cash and avoid risk. The time horizon gets shorter - people want their money back now, not at some point in the future. On the up side, a crash might help this town rediscover its community. The expansion has been running full-tilt all over the nation... perhaps it's time for a return to local businesses and community involvement.

I just wish they hadn't burned down so many trees in the boom.

Yeah, it's a bit rediculous that Smyrna has no book store. I do photography and screen printing and can't find any place closer than Nashville regarding those hobbies either.
