1100 jobs to be filled in Smyrna

Looks like there is going to be another mass call out for job applicants for the new Nissan expansion.
The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and Yates Services LLC will host a job fair Wednesday, Nov. 2, to help Nissan fill more than 1,100 positions at its Smyrna vehicle-production facility.
Good luck. Just in the last few days the gov announced that unemployment was up slightly in our county.

It's Monday — everybody works on Monday

This is likely the worst I've seen for the weekly roundup for open positions in local governments. To start Smyrna has nothing to offer job wise. The hiring freeze is understandable, and seasonal jobs that had the summer looking good are now gone.

LaVergne does have a few.

Payroll Clerk 2011 (Posted 8/12/2011 until Filled)

Music right down the road

It really is okay to admit it. While Smyrna does have a talented field of musical performers, the direction most look to is Nashville. Smyrna, outside of a few bars and high school performances, is real short on live music. I myself enjoy listening to the classics so the Fall season at MTSU really looks good this year.

MTSU has a well developed music program and with that comes a certain amount of student recitals, visiting performers, and faculty recitals. Below is the listing for the month of September and these quality performances are just a short trip down the road. There is everything from vocal to wind instruments to choral events scheduled for this year. Now some do cost money, but for the most part they are free...yes I said free. They also are not just for students, but for anyone who wants to hear music that is live, not-pop, and performed by skilled individuals.
Unless otherwise noted, all concerts are in the T. Earl Hinton Music Hall of Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus.

Most concerts are FREE (we have tried to note the few that aren't).
Jazz Artist Series $15 and large Choral Events $10 for non-MTSU personnel.
All concerts listed here are open to the general public.
Here are the listings for the month of September so you can have time to make arrangements if you wish. While the student recitals might have a few rough edges, a little good music can go a long way.
09/08/11 - Deanna Little faculty flute recital - 8:00 p.m.
09/09/11 - Celine Thackston guest flute recital - 6:00 p.m.
09/09/11 - Ryan Stewart senior vocal recital - 8:00 p.m.
09/12/11 - Todd Waldecker faculty recital - 8:00 p.m.
09/15/11 - Ryan Fogg guest piano recital - 8:00 p.m.
09/16/11 - MTSU Opera Performance 7:30 p.m. (Tucker Theater) ($10)
09/17/11 - MTSU Opera, Into the Woods - 7:30 p.m. (Tucker Theater) ($10)
09/18/11 - MTSU Opera, Into the Woods - 3:00 p.m. (Tucker Theater) ($10)
09/19/11 - David Loucky faculty low brass recital - 7:30 p.m.
09/20/11 - Lei Weng guest piano recital - 8:00 p.m.
09/21/11 - Maya Stone (bassoon)/Spencer Lambright (composer) faculty recital- 8:00 p.m.
09/23/11 - MTSU Wind Ensemble - 7:30 p.m.09/26/11 - Honor Choir (all day)
09/27/11 - Christine Poythress faculty voice recital - 8:00 p.m.
09/28/11 - Paul Osterfield composition studio recital - 8:00 p.m.
I hope you get the chance to go and have a good night of music and dinner...but no fast food. That would just be wrong.

Its Monday — everybody works on Monday

In 1993 the movie 'Dave' had a line I always liked. "Its Monday — everybody works on Monday" was something that always stuck with me. Getting a job does not just mean a paycheck, it also means benefits, dental, life insurance, and all the other items that remove some of the stress of daily life. I'm not sure if anyone will get hired by this blog post and the following ones each Monday...but I'll try.
Dave: If you've ever seen the look on somebody's face the day they finally get a job, I've had some experience with this, they look like they could fly. And its not about the paycheck, it's about respect, it's about looking in the mirror and knowing that you've done something valuable with your day. And if one person could start to feel this way, and then another person, and then another person, soon all these other problems may not seem so impossible. You don't really know how much you can do until you, stand up and decide to try.
Good luck in your job hunting.

Gun Show near us

This weekend for those inclined, we have two gun shows happening nearby.

In Mufreesboro we have on Mar 19-20 at the Mid-TN Expo Center, 1209 Park Ave the RK Show. The RK shows were in Smyrna for a short time before the VA center closed the expo center in Smyrna.

In Nashville we have the Bill Goodmans Gun and Knife show at the Nashville Fairgrounds. Pictures show how it looks, and the last time I went to one of theirs I helped my brother pick out his first handgun...a Ruger P345.

If this is what you count as fun, and I do, then this coming weekend looks like it will be busy for you.

Sparks to run

It is now official. Michael Sparks has announced that he is going to run for the 49th state district seat currently held by Kent Coleman.
Commissioner Mike Sparks plans to file papers in the coming days to serve as state representative for District 49. The seat is currently held by state Rep. Kent Coleman, a Democrat, who was elected in 2002.

Sparks was elected to represent county District 11, which covers central Smyrna, in 2002. He defeated then-incumbent Jimmy Woods. A lifelong resident of Smyrna, Sparks said he was approached by the Republican party to run for the state seat that same year.

“I didn’t feel lead to run for it at that time. Since then, I’ve been on the county commission, the Smyrna Municipal Planning Commission and I’ve been a business owner. I feel like I’ve gotten some good experience,” said Sparks, 39. “I feel like now I can bring another conservative voice to the state legislature.”
That leaves Chris Deal as the only contender for Mike Sparks county seat.
