Another Nissan/Yates job fair

They have another job fair this weekend for those interested in working at Nissan.
Jobseekers in Rutherford and neighboring middle Tennessee counties are invited to apply to Yates Services, LLC, for positions located at Nissan’s factory in Smyrna, the state announced today.

The job fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Murfreesboro Career Center, 1313 Old Fort Parkway, according to the news release from the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
Of course they are looking for ones with certain skills and qualifications.
Qualifications:
o Must be at least 18 years of age:
o Must have a valid driver’s license (any state) and second form of ID;
o Must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently;
o Must be able to pass a criminal background check (no felony convictions);
o Must be able to pass a thorough drug screen (zero tolerance);
o Must have at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent;
o Prefer 6 months of previous industrial experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment reflected on résumé or application;
o Please note that if you have interviewed with Yates in the past 6 months, you will not be eligible to reapply.
It should be noted that if you CAN NOT make the fair you can just go to Yates during the week and apply. A relative applied earlier this week and they have already been hired. This job fair is not the only chance to get a job there, it is just easier to get job applicants all in one place.

Good luck.

1100 jobs to be filled in Smyrna

Looks like there is going to be another mass call out for job applicants for the new Nissan expansion.
The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and Yates Services LLC will host a job fair Wednesday, Nov. 2, to help Nissan fill more than 1,100 positions at its Smyrna vehicle-production facility.
Good luck. Just in the last few days the gov announced that unemployment was up slightly in our county.

They call it recovery III

Todays recovery project is very specific to Smyrna and it has a set ammount and very specific locations. This project is listed under the banner of "Highway Infrastructure Investment Grants". This program has the job of...
This project will improve safety and reliability of the transportation system by replacing an older bridge on SR-102 with a new BRIDGES OVER BRANCH AND ROCKY FORK CREEK to serve the community for the next several decades.

A bridge. A good solid object that we can wrap our brain around and understand.

The map for this project and the ones for the rest of the week are all simply placed on the location of the town hall.

The overview of the project did bring a smile to my face.

It's Monday — everybody works on Monday

This is likely the worst I've seen for the weekly roundup for open positions in local governments. To start Smyrna has nothing to offer job wise. The hiring freeze is understandable, and seasonal jobs that had the summer looking good are now gone.

Its Monday — everybody works on Monday

In 1993 the movie 'Dave' had a line I always liked. "Its Monday — everybody works on Monday" was something that always stuck with me. Here in Smyrna the economy simply sucks as much as the rest of the USA, and it's hard to find a job. With that in mind I'm asking you to take a moment if you have the need and look at these job openings from the town of Smyrna.

Getting a job does not just mean a paycheck, it also means benefits, dental, life insurance, and all the other items that remove some of the stress of daily life. I'm not sure if anyone will get hired by this blog post and the following ones each Monday...but I'll try.
Dave: If you've ever seen the look on somebody's face the day they finally get a job, I've had some experience with this, they look like they could fly. And its not about the paycheck, it's about respect, it's about looking in the mirror and knowing that you've done something valuable with your day. And if one person could start to feel this way, and then another person, and then another person, soon all these other problems may not seem so impossible. You don't really know how much you can do until you, stand up and decide to try.
Good luck in your job hunting.

Jobs coming to Smyrna

I'm not sure how many of these positions will be filled locally, but we have a number of temp jobs that will hit our town soon.
Rentenbach has worked on two high schools for Hamilton County Schools, Signal Mountain Middle/High and East Hamilton High, in the last few years. The Signal Mountain project was completed in 2008 at a cost of $42.5 million. That school is 262,000 square feet, compared to East Hamilton High, which is 287,000 square feet when it opened in 2009. The newer school cost $41.9 million to build.

Stewarts Creek, modeled after Siegel High, will be about 350,000 square feet.
......
"When we built Signal Mountain, we had 250 to 300 people on the site. This project would take that many people or more," she said. "But that's steady employment those people will have for 22 months."
You figure the company has a core of employees, but most of the people will be local hires.

Construction should begin in July, so keep an eye on who wins the bid, and if I find out I'll post it. You might have a job if you go for it....I wonder if they need a fat out-of-shape liberal arts major to help build the school. I can hope can't I?

New Business and a rumor

I was asked if two specifics stores were moving into the strip mall next to Krispy Kreme. I checked and found that I could confirm one and thought some of you might be interested.

From their facebook page they describe themselves as such.

Papa Murphy's Take 'n' Bake Pizza of Middle Tennessee
Founded September 6, 2006
About Papa Murphy’s is the largest take ‘n’ bake pizza company in the world with over 1,150 stores in 32 states. We were voted “Best Pizza Chain in America” by consumers nationwide for the last seven years! Nobody tops a fresher pizza!
Company Overview Papa Murphy's of Middle Tennessee is operated and held by U.S. Pizza, LLC. This group holds the franchise rights to all of Middle TN and will build approximately 40 locations in the area. There are currently 16 open for business.
Products Take and Bake Pizza, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Cheesy Bread, Cinnamon Wheels, Salads and Beverages
The other restaurant inquired about was Panera Bread. Sadly I cannot find anything on them moving into Smyrna, but we can hope. I'm just glad to see any movement and growth in Smyrna.

Now there is no news on hiring as of yet, but their online job section is taking applications in general and getting in early never hurts...for the most part.

In Smyrna?

You hear of the horror like living conditions of migrant workers in the fruit and vegetable fields of Florida and California. The cramped quarters and substandard housing is part of all good labor disputes. I am shocked to hear the word "labor camp" and "Smyrna" used in the same article...the same sentence even.
Under the H2-B program, "the foreign worker is bound to the sponsoring employer and if the employer terminates the employment relationship - even illegally - the worker loses his legal status to work or remain in the United States," the complaint states.
The Vanderbilts sent the plaintiffs and other workers to its labor camps in Mason and Smyrna, Tennessee.
I'm surprised no one has attempted to photograph this labor camp so the world can see the horror...or the hyperbole of the scare tactics of the complainant.

Good news people

Every job counts.
More than 60 new jobs are coming to Rutherford County.

Gov. Bill Haslam and state economic officials announced Wednesday morning that the auto supplier Valeo is moving to Smyrna.

Valeo is renovating a facility on Enon Springs Road. The company makes front-end parts for Nissan.
I'm going to have to be less pessimistic in the near future.

Hiring at Nissan....NOW!

It looks like the hiring phase of the plant and new production line going online next year is now happening.
Jobseekers in Rutherford and neighboring Middle Tennessee counties are invited to apply to Yates Services, LLC, for positions located at Nissan’s Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna.

The job fair will take place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Murfreesboro Career Center, 1313 Old Fort Parkway.
Good luck.

Higher than the county

The unemployment numbers for the county and Smyrna have been released and Smyrna is higher to my surprise.
Rutherford County’s unemployment rate for February stayed at the same 8.8 percent rate measured in January, the state reported Thursday.
.....
Smyrna’s unemployment rate was at 9.7 percent for both the first two months of this year. Both rates are lower than the 10 percent unemployment measured February 2010.
This is not a horrible difference...unless you're one of the .9 percent employed that is the difference.
