Inauguration of Mahmood Mosque
The local Mosque is having their official inauguration and sent me this email. Since it does say 'and your friends' I thought to share this news with you. My last trip to their open house was very pleasant and I think it might be a good experience for you and your children to meet with a part of what a growing town like Smyrna entails, the introduction of many people of other faiths, customs and cultures to our community.
Dear Sir,I'm withholding a reaction right now on another issue, but I saw on the sign of the Higland Heights Church OF Christ that it is having a 5 hour long seminar this weekend on Islam. I'm not sure what that includes and have recieved back no replies after several attempts to contect them to ask about this meeting and its contents. I hope it is not in reaction to the mosque coming to Smyrna.
Official inauguration of Mahmood Mosque in Smyrna is scheduled for March 20th. The program is as follows:
12.30 Lunch (Indian Food)
2.00 Gathering
2.10 Introductions
2.20 Guest Presentations
3.15 Question/Answer
4.00 Thankyou
Ahmadiyya Muslim Community respectfully invite you and your friends to join us in this celebration.

An open house.
January 9th, Saturday the Masjid Mahmood Mosque of Smyrna Tennessee had an open house for the community. The Mosque is housed in the building that once housed the Risen Life Fellowship on Maple Street. The Masjid Mahmood Mosque is part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. This reform movement in the Muslim religion started in India near the end of the 19th century.
The open house started at 11am and after a meet and great we enjoyed a nice talk by Imam Azhar Hanif Sahib from St. Louis. He spoke of the issues of being Muslim in the world today and specifically of being one in America. The speaker spoke to the guests as if to calm any worries about the new neighbors in our midst. He spoke of the Ahmadi‘s communities view of Jihad as a struggle to improve one’s self, to fight against the desires of man and was not associated with the Muslims normally seen on CNN an Headline news.
I leaned and whispered to my wife that the speaker was “preaching to the choir”. I suspected that people who would dress nice and go to an open house would not have such a negative view of the Muslim community to start with and would understand that the extreme minority does not represent the majority.
We then had a question and answer period that addressed questions on the perception of Muslims, my question on if as a reform community do they still ascribe to the tradition 5 pillars of Islam, and to other subjects.
At about 1 we broke for Lunch. Indian cuisine was the main course and all I could identify was a chicken dish and a rice dish, the name of the other dishes eluded me, but were all flavorful and spicy. I do wish I knew how to make that flat bread they had piles of.
All in all I enjoyed their open house and am glad they chose our town to create a center in. Smyrna for all it is, is sadly lacking in diversity. While the smattering of Spanish language signs might seem too diverse to some, I wish a more flavorful existence. This is a welcome step in that process.

Rated R [for Religion] II
In September I posted on a new church that was coming to Smyrna with the idea of renting space in the Malco Theatre for their services. I loved the idea of this merging of two services and how they can gain from each other. I'm impressed such a merger happened here in Smyrna.
On October 18th the church met and they were kind enough to send some images on how it went so you can get an idea of what a movie theatre congregation would look like.

The campus pastor emailed me this.

Sunday went incredible. We had over 200 people in attendance! Russ Lee did an amazing job leading worship and Pastor Brady gave an powerful message on what God is doing through New Vision Church in our community and around the world. The theater looked outstanding and the kids and the preschool area worked great. The worship service ended at about 11:05 and we were completely loaded and heading towards I-HOP by 11:45. This next week will give us a good picture of what a normal Sunday will look like ( a part from all the first Sunday hype) and we will start a new series “One Month To Live: 30 Days to a no regret life.”This gets tagged not just as "church event" but also as "grand opening".
