'National Night Out' is a great opportunity for citizens, law enforcement and other public safety officials to join forces. Events are planned to promote crime prevention and drug prevention awareness and to strengthen the police - community partnership. We encourage neighborhoods to come together and send the message that we are all working together to prevent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe. On August 4th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, EMS, and fire fighters.
'National Night Out' will show neighborhood strength, increase the police officer/citizen bond and help to make our community a safer place to live.

Taking back our neighborhood.
As many of our readers know by now, there has been some trouble going on in the older parts of town and as I have talked with my neighbors, they seem to feel the same way as I do. We are not going to let these thugs take over our neighborhoods and let them win. I have talked with the Smyrna police dept and we are going to set up a neighborhood watch. They also informed me that they are patrolling more and will be watching everything that is going on. I feel that if these thugs are caught they should be put in jail and made to learn their lessons. As a first time home buyer I am not going to let someone come and destroy my property. I love my home and I am not going anywhere so don't try to make me move. I will be here much longer than you will be! I do know many of the Police officers that work on different shifts and they assured me that they are going to patrolling the area more. If anyone wants to create a neighborhood watch please call city hall and ask to speak with Sgt Gibson and he will talk with you and tell you what you need to do to get this started. He is one of the best police officers around and he will assure you that we can kick this in the butt! I have enjoyed meeting with neighbors that I haven't met yet by phone. Many in this area have been here and settled and don't want things like to happen. We are in strong numbers and we will overcome this.

Neighborhood watch
I just got off the phone with Sgt Gibson and he stated that if if we wanted to start a neighborhood watch in our area we need to find a date and time and he will come out and talk with us all and set this up. He also stated that many people just want the signs posted up which is still a good thing but in this day and time we need to come together and watch each others back. He did tell me that there isnt any evidence that this was a drive by shooting. Also there are not any know gangs that are organized in our city but there are wannabe. Teens that want to be gang members but aren't. If any of you want a meeting with him for the area in concern please leave me a comment or email me at bearroller9640 at yahoo dot com and I will set this up. Let me know either way what you want to do. Either a sign or an actual watch! thanks again for reading This is Smyrna!
