Taste of Smyrna-Tomorrow

The 2011 second annual Taste of Smyrna is happening Friday(an odd day in my view), and you're welcome to be there for a small fee.

It’s rare that you can get a meal at a good restaurant for less than $10.

On June 3, you can eat at more than 20 places all at once for that price.

The second annual Taste of Smyrna is aiming to bring the community together to sample local fare. Burgers, burritos, subs, chicken, Thai food, smoothies, doughuts, coffee and ice cream will be waiting for hungry families wanting to try something new.

Support your local angry chicken

The sad story of two chickens being hunted by the system. Angry chicken is angry.

On a quiet San Diego cul-de-sac, behind a house perched at the edge of a canyon and concealed by a thick canopy of trees, Oscar and Owl, fugitive hens, are in hiding.

They've been lying low since January, in a makeshift coop, a ramshackle pen nothing like the palatial wood frame setup they once called home in North Park. But it'll have to do for now. Oscar and Owl can't go back.

They've been banished.

I still cannot comprehend how the Smyrna town council would not look into this subject more then it did a few years ago...but we have pretty parks so all is well.

The music of Smyrna

1925 was the last year Smyrna had a street fair before the Great Depression stopped this lovely tradition. In the last many years Smyrna has enjoyed Depot Days, but this puts Depot Days to shame.

Smyrna businesses had on their own organized the Smyrna Fair Association. The first of their fairs was held on August 20 1914 and was a smashing success. These fairs were organized yearly and was a great draw to the town of Smyrna. The fairs were run before Smyrna had its first fire engine in 1916 or its first paved road in 1929. The last of these fairs happened in 1925 as the great depression placed a pale over the whole nation.

Now these were not small happenings. For example the 1924 fair had individual people in charge of different departments of the fair. Section included...

They had horse shows, concerts, car shows, best lady rider and best old soldier contests...plus fun giveaways such as 2 gallons of icecream for the largest family attending , free hair cut for the man with the longest hair and $10 for the best ash log. I will admit the ash log one confuses me. This and much more information can be found in the book "Smyrna, the Church, the town" by Hover.

In his book they had a street picture of the 1925 fair, the last held. Under it there were comments by three people and one caught my interest.

I read this and decided I wanted to listen to the music of Smyrna in 1925.

In that same year, 1925, Edison Labs released on a cylinder the song "I wish I was a single girl again" by Vernon Dalhart to some success in sales. The song has been released by many people and like most songs of the period there were many varieties as this page will show. As close as I can tell this is the very song played at Bradford's eating place in Smyrna in 1925....this youtube video is played on an Edison Amberola 50 cylinder phonograph. While not a victrola, the sound should be the same.

Young ladies will be instructed in the fine arts of 19th Century womanhood such as dress, etiquette, sewing, dance, and much more. The young ladies are encouraged to dress in period dress as they live the mornings as girls might have 150 years ago.

The boys spend an active week complete with drills, camps, crafts, and games as they learn about the life of Civil War soldiers. History presenters bring the past alive for the boys. Period dress is optional.

Apple Valley School Summer Camp,

Deadline for Registration: June 10, 2011

"Students" role play as a member of families from long ago as they enjoy authentic lessons from 19th Century schools, make crafts, play games, sing, and enjoy the historic house and grounds. This is a very popular camp and will fill rapidly. Period costumes are optional.

The Smyrna Splashpad at Gregory Mills park opens today for the summer...I hope the cicadas like a shower. I'm not sure of the hours.

The Smyrna Cowboy is a local video blogger. He has put together a video for May's Motorcycle safety month and asked me to post it.



My cousins partner is a scooter owner and thanks to a reckless driver with no license or insurance is now without her scooter. Take care because it is beginning to be the nice days of summer that fills the roads with cycles of every size, color, and shape...and broken is not a good shape for them to end the day as.

In Smyrna?

You hear of the horror like living conditions of migrant workers in the fruit and vegetable fields of Florida and California. The cramped quarters and substandard housing is part of all good labor disputes. I am shocked to hear the word "labor camp" and "Smyrna" used in the same article...the same sentence even.

Under the H2-B program, "the foreign worker is bound to the sponsoring employer and if the employer terminates the employment relationship - even illegally - the worker loses his legal status to work or remain in the United States," the complaint states.
The Vanderbilts sent the plaintiffs and other workers to its labor camps in Mason and Smyrna, Tennessee.

I'm surprised no one has attempted to photograph this labor camp so the world can see the horror...or the hyperbole of the scare tactics of the complainant.

Good news people

Every job counts.

More than 60 new jobs are coming to Rutherford County.

Gov. Bill Haslam and state economic officials announced Wednesday morning that the auto supplier Valeo is moving to Smyrna.

Valeo is renovating a facility on Enon Springs Road. The company makes front-end parts for Nissan.

I'm going to have to be less pessimistic in the near future.

Spaghetti for Friday

Good local cause

The Smyrna Senior Center, located at 100 Raikes St., near the Smyrna Public Library, will host a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. The dinner includes baked spaghetti, salad, bread, homemade desserts and tea or coffee. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than 10. The dinner is dine-in or carry out.

Hiring at Nissan....NOW!

It looks like the hiring phase of the plant and new production line going online next year is now happening.

Jobseekers in Rutherford and neighboring Middle Tennessee counties are invited to apply to Yates Services, LLC, for positions located at Nissan’s Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna.

The job fair will take place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Murfreesboro Career Center, 1313 Old Fort Parkway.
