Free water for your pool...in LaVergne that is.

I was looking up some info on the LaVergne TN website and saw this
"It is that time of year again. BEFORE you fill your pool, remember to stop by City Hall to pick up a “once a year” pool adjustment form..."
That is so cool! Here is a copy [pdf] of their form to help offset the cost. I wonder if Smyrna does that for our residents? I'll check and find out.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development is proud to roll out our Career Coaches...mobile centers with services similar to what you might find in a Tennessee Career Center. These vehicles will arrive on the scene to provide a mobile computer lab with Internet access; create a venue for workshops including résumé assistance and interviewing skills; and serve as a recruitment center for companies moving into our state.

Omni hut founder dies

A local resident that was a fixture in Smyrna long before Nissan has passed away recently. Jim Walls was the Founder of Omni Hut and through the restaurant met and became friends to a whole town.
He opened Omni Hut in 1960, shortly after retiring from service. The restaurant is based on the cooking styles and recipes he learned abroad. About three days after it opened, customers kept telling him, “That’s the best Polynesian food I’ve ever had.” So he switched the theme of the Omni Hut to Polynesian.

State Rep. Mike Sparks said Walls gave him his first job at the restaurant at the age of 13.

“I remember him telling me that the banker he went to get a loan said he’d only be in business about three months,” Sparks said. “Maj. Walls was a visionary and he really walked to the beat of his own drum. He had a belief in himself that he could make (Omni Hut) successful.”
State representative Mike Sparks spoke well of him to me on many occasions in the past.

A memorial service will be this Sunday for those interested.

Local Auditions

Lamplighter's Theater is having open auditions...if you're the right age category.
Announcing Auditions for Leaving Iowa
The spark behind Leaving Iowa comes from being children of parents from the now dubbed "greatest generation." The story is a toast to their idealism and character and a little roast of their undying dedication to the classic family road trip. More specifically, it is the story of Don Browning, a middle-aged writer, who returns home and decides to finally take his father's ashes to his childhood home, as requested. But when Don discovers Grandma's house is now a grocery store, he begins traveling across Iowa searching for a proper resting place for his father.

This father-and-son road trip shifts smoothly from the present to Don's memories of the annual, torturous vacations of his childhood. Don's existential journey leads him to reconcile his past and present at the center of the United States. Leaving Iowa is a postcard to anyone who has ever found himself or herself driving alone on a road, revisiting fond memories of his or her youth.*
