Simply Smyrna Summer Fest

Some local businesses are hosting a Summer Fest for Smyrna. Smyrna used to have a Festival Organization that lasted many years and helped the community greatly. This is really what being part of a town is all about.

Saturday June 25, 4 - 7pm.
HobNobSmyrna, Chick-fil-a of Smyrna, and Carpe Artista will be sponsoring the first "Simply Smyrna Summer Fest."

The event is free to the public and there will be games, inflatables, face painting, rock climbing wall, prizes, music, food while supplies last and much more. This is great time to get out and hobnob with people in the community and local business owners.

Make plans and meet some great people.

Mondays group is 'Bryson Weakley'. Described simply as "Five guys from middle Tennessee." I think they are a great way to start the week off.

Fancy is a doxie mix, about 3 years old.  She has a very sweet disposition. Animal control picked her up, found her owner, but her owner never came and claimed her!  She is about 20lbs, reddish brown, long hair.

Cat of the Week: Tigger

Tigger is a declawed, 10 year old female. Her family had to move and couldn't take her. She acts a bit hostile when you aproach her, but once she learns you won't hurt her, she loves attention.  She was with her family her entire life and is scared, confused and unsure.

Because of her age, Tigger's adoption fee is $25.  She is also a candidate for our seniors to seniors program.

The "All About Animals Rescue & Adoption" group here in Smyrna is holding a bake sale for the support of their charges.

We will be having a bake sale fundraiser at the PetSmart in Smyrna! Come by & meet our adoptables...and buy a cookie to help pay for their vetting!

The AAARA is a non-profit and that pretty much means they depend on the kindness of the community to do the best they can. On their facebook page they have a list of items that cannot get enough of.

Some of the items are obvious, but a few surprised me. I know I have a few collars lying around that my cat looked at and said 'Oh heck no!' before they even went on.

The AAARA has their own blog where they post information on animals locally that are up for adoption. I've extended to them an invitation to do a weekly post here to help spread the news and information on their group I hope they accept.

Jobs coming to Smyrna

I'm not sure how many of these positions will be filled locally, but we have a number of temp jobs that will hit our town soon.

Rentenbach has worked on two high schools for Hamilton County Schools, Signal Mountain Middle/High and East Hamilton High, in the last few years. The Signal Mountain project was completed in 2008 at a cost of $42.5 million. That school is 262,000 square feet, compared to East Hamilton High, which is 287,000 square feet when it opened in 2009. The newer school cost $41.9 million to build.

Stewarts Creek, modeled after Siegel High, will be about 350,000 square feet.

"When we built Signal Mountain, we had 250 to 300 people on the site. This project would take that many people or more," she said. "But that's steady employment those people will have for 22 months."

You figure the company has a core of employees, but most of the people will be local hires.

Construction should begin in July, so keep an eye on who wins the bid, and if I find out I'll post it. You might have a job if you go for it....I wonder if they need a fat out-of-shape liberal arts major to help build the school. I can hope can't I?

This looks like a great family event and a way to expose your kids to a different taste of music. Here is a performance by them from europe. The band is in town for the Fold Festival that is happening this week in Murfreesboro.

The last talent for the week is Gabriel Redding. Classified on the site as 'pop' his bio shows that he is also a voice for fighting Multiple Sclerosis.

GABRIEL produces modern pop/rock music with twist of classic, electronic, and world instruments. His shows are a demonstration of catchy melodies, stunts, and his self-taught ability to play over 50 instruments, in some cases two or three at a time, all in stunning 4.1 digital surround sound, completely enveloping the audience in his remarkable world of sounds and sights. Gabriel Redding is also drummer for the modern rock band, the Redding Brothers, and has opened for Boys Like Girls, Hinder, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Jason Mraz, Bo Bice, Joan Jett, Gin Blossoms, KC and the Sunshine Band, and has performed in the middle-east for the troops on a USO tour. He performs at colleges and military bases all over the US, coffee shops and movie theaters, and where ever else he finds to play. From June 29th to August 10th, 2009, GABRIEL bicycled across the continent, from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Seattle, Washington, totaling 43 days and 3204.3 miles to raise money and awareness for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Todays performer is Cliff Moore and he performs in the Christian genre of music. His bio describes himself as such

The Vision...

It's pretty simple... Music and Worship combined. In the Gospel of John chapter 4 a conversation takes place between Jesus and a woman who has come to a well to draw water. During this encounter Jesus reveals a truth about worship. He instructs the woman that a day is coming when people will worship the Father in "spirit and truth", and that the Father is looking for these types of worshipers. Cliff Moore Music is dedicated to providing an atmosphere for people to accomplish this. Through simple songs we hope to inspire the listener to examine themselves, and lift high the name of Christ!

From Smyrna to the ROO

Looks like Smyrna is a jump off point for a big bike trip to Bonnaroo.

For concertgoers looking for a way to avoid traffic snarls and long lines for this year’s Bonnaroo Music Festival June 9-12 in Manchester, Tenn., festival organizers have just the thing – a 60-mile, overnight bike ride to the event.

The inaugural Roo Ride literally takes the scenic route and cuts down one’s carbon footprint. The ride departs June 11 from the city of Smyrna to Manchester, taking in points of interest along the route such as Civil War battlegrounds. The route ends a short distance from festival grounds where riders can camp and enjoy the event, bike back or hitch a ride back with Roo Ride organizers.

This is pretty cool. Odd that it starts AFTER the concerts have already commenced, but it still looks like fun.

Creative Clash Visual Arts Camp

Carpe Artista, a local arts project has planned for the summer a few programs for youth you might be interested in.

Carpe Artista describes their impressive plan of action and what they desire for the future.

Locally, the strategy of Carpe Artista is to revitalize the historic part of Smyrna by infusing the physical area with the arts and development of the arts community. The vision is to create a hub of artistic activity through the creation of an artist development center based in a coffee shop. This will be located in one of the historic buildings on Front Street.

The coffee shop will provide a perpetual venue for the presentation of art to the community. It will be a place for ongoing teaching of curriculum for artists in their specific art form as well as leadership and character development. In addition, Carpe Artista will work to connect other arts organizations throughout Smyrna, Rutherford County and the greater Nashville area

Angry Chicken wants a bike

A local Backyard chicken group has organized its THIRD Coop Tour to show people backyard chickens. This community outreach seems a good wayt o show people how they can go about starting their own chicken program. Sadly it pretty much has to already be legal to do something like this.

Walk it. Drive it. Or bike it. Alameda Backyard Chickens has teamed up once again with Bike Alameda to sponsor the Coop Tour 2011.

It's the third running of the event showcasing eight homes -- along a nearly four-mile trek -- that have a variety of chickens and chicken coops proudly displayed in their yards. Its purpose: to educate Island residents about raising and keeping backyard chickens.

"It's not as straight forward as it sounds. You have to have a safe, clean place for them to sleep. The coop has to be safe from predators like raccoons, aggressive neighborhood cats or chicken hawks," said Jacqueline Cooper, 48, a two-year member of Alameda Backyard Chickens and co-organizer of the tour. "I have an aviary coop, one woman has a tiki themed coop, another has a much more developed urban farmstead with meat rabbits and vegetable plots. So, it's to show people a variety of coops, chickens and answer any questions they may have about raising their own."

Todays musical days of Summer is a group NOT from Smyrna, but one that will be performing here this coming Friday and you're invited. The Parks and Recreations department will be hosting them Friday as part of the 'Music in the Park' program.

New Business and a rumor

I was asked if two specifics stores were moving into the strip mall next to Krispy Kreme. I checked and found that I could confirm one and thought some of you might be interested.

The other restaurant inquired about was Panera Bread. Sadly I cannot find anything on them moving into Smyrna, but we can hope. I'm just glad to see any movement and growth in Smyrna.

Now there is no news on hiring as of yet, but their online job section is taking applications in general and getting in early never hurts...for the most part.

Prevent Identity Theft Smyrna Shred Day

This is a good idea. A community document destruction service.

Consumer identity theft and fraud are a growing problem in our community. To raise awareness and to promote prevention, Town of Smyrna and the Smyrna Police Department along with ShredX Company have teamed up to host a Community Shred day event in Smyrna June 25th from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm "weather permitting". We will offer paper shredding services for local residents and small businesses. The event will be at the Smyrna Town Hall in the front parking lot area, and the service will provide fast available drop off service, while a state of the art High Speed Shredding unit will shred and destroy the paper as it arrives on sight.

I'll repost the information the day of the event for those interested.

Being near Nashville Smyrna has a lot of musical talent that many do not know of or have ever had the chance to hear. I figured that I would share with you some local talent to show the wide range of music in our town. At the website Reverbnation Smyrna is represented by everything from rap to death metal to religious music. I have made a random selection and plan for the near future to share with you one a day. I hope you enjoy today’s selection as it is wild start to a new series.

Today's group is Dyer Road and list their group as Metal/Deathcore/Basedcore. Their bio says...

We are Dyer Road from Smyrna, Tennessee. We're a 4 piece deathcore hardcore metalcore black metal death metal band, pretty much a mix of all things heavy. We've been writing and playing together since July 2010, went through a few vocal changes, but now have a solid line up that's ready to keep going forward and take over the world.
