I'm doing an article on guns in the parks. I would like your opinion no matter which side you fall on. Understand that the people that would be allowed are ones with permits and have been trained, vetted, and okay'd by the police.

If you wish you could email if you do not with to leave a quote in comments. I might try to work some material into the column if I can.

Hit me!

I do think that law abiding permit holding citizens should be allowed to carry their weapons into parks. Fences are made to keep honest people honest, and anyone who has a carry permit has to be a law abiding citizen.

Do you feel safer knowing that honest citizens might be in the park with their gun? Or do you feel safer knowing that the only people in the park with a gun are drug dealers and criminals?

I must agree with the sentiments of the previous comment. In addition I should say that I strongly believe it is primarily my responsibility to protect my family and to this end carry my hand gun in parks already. I would much rather explain to a judge why I had a gun in a park than explain to a family member why I was unable to protect them if the need arose.

In this day and age we need to protect our loved ones and I feel that we should only be able to have guns in our homes. If we let those carry guns in parks, where gang members sometimes hang out, then our children could be at risk of getting caught up in crossfire and someone could get hurt. I feel that if something bad was to happen in a park and someone that was legal to carry a gun was there and shot at someone they could hurt someone that wasnt involved.

Also if they carry guns into bars what makes one think that someone wouldnt drink while carrying a gun and then cause drama? It's just an accenident waiting to happen.

People can protect their homes any way I see fit but to have them out in public is something different!

Why should I only be able to protect myself while in my home? Do I not have the right to protect myself wherever I am?

Do you really believe the Police will be there to protect you while out in public? If you are lucky, one may be around, when something happens. Me, I am not willing to risk it.

Why does everyone who opposes concealed carry by citizens always think there will be shoot outs with criminals? Where did you get this idea? From TV?

Why do you believe it would be hard for concealed permit carry holders to follow the law? They went to the trouble to take classes, demonstrate proficiency on the range, be fingerprinted, vetted by local, state, and federal law enforcement to carry.

Why do people against concealed carry think the Police are much more qualified to carry than regular citizens? Because they went to a 12 week training program? Because they shoot at a range once a month to keep their skills up? By that logic, then all current and ex-military should be able to carry as well. They went through a 12 week program as well. Heck, why don't we let all concealed permit applicants go through the same class. Then they will be "qualified" in the eyes of the scared ones.

Please do not deny me my rights just because you are scared!

Guns should definitely be "allowed" in the park.

Of course, "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." I believe that means they shouldn't even be permitted. Constitutionally, it doesn't seem to matter what the town says - we have a right to carry. I hope our town recognizes that.

If we were allowed to take care of our own defense - and we did - the police would almost be out of a job.

I agree David; before the "conceal carry" laws were passed in this state I carried, not because of a disregard for local law, but, because of a strong commitment to my personal responsibility to protect my family. As soon as the state law was passed I took the course and relieved my permit. However, I do not look on the state law as being required for me to carry in parks. Where I take my family I take the means to keep them safe.

I also think persons who hold permits should be allowed to carry in the parks. Basically, anyone with a permit should be able to legally carry anywhere in the state, imho.

Are there any publicly available statistics on the current crime rates in TN parks?
Listening to some people, it sounds like there may be a need to address the rampant crime in the parks.
Will having more people bringing guns into the parks cause less deaths?
I'd like to be able to make an informed decision, but, I don't know where to find answers like 'how safe are our parks?', 'Are there any shootings in the parks now?'

No guns should be allowed in parks or in family areas. If the parks are that dangerous, why are people taking their children there? Responsible people do not always make wise decisions.
