The QB Club will also be collecting donations during our last home game this Friday night against Wilson Central.

If you would like to donate, please contact me (Robin Garner) or SHS.

The idiocy and joy of youth

I enjoy the memories of my idiot youth when life was full and I broke the rules. You really have not lived until you've awoken in a car in a field and have no idea where you're at...but you know you have one massive damn hangover. Of course many of my greatest achievements were performed in school. If I had been in school when they had zero tolerance policies I might still be there.

I've come across some more local videos of youth at the Smyrna High School with this humble description.
Smyrna High Schools "Freshman Initiation Day" There Was A Huge Mosh Pit In The Back Of The School.
Enjoy

I like the yells of 5.0. when someone spots either a school resource officer, or a smyrna police officer.

The youtube account holder also has 4 more videos titled as "Bathroom Mosh" 1, 2, 3, and 4 and described as "Bathroom Mosh Pit 1 During Freshman Initiation Day at Smyrna High."

Looks like the same fun I had when I was young.

New Smyrna High football coach.

WGNS is reporting that a new football coach has been hired by the Smyrna High School
"Former Smyrna assistant Matt Williams has been hired to lead the Bulldogs. Principal Robert Raikes made the announcement Wednesday. Williams leaves his current position as defensive coordinator at Blackman, where he coached with his brother, Mark…who is the offensive coordinator."
I hope he has as much luck and skill as our last coach and can bring us a third championship.

Chicken or egg situation

Is it the coach that makes a winning team or the team that is on the field, or maybe a combination of both? Smyrna will find out as the head football coach of Smyrna High School has resigned.
Smyrna’s Philip Shadowens has resigned his position as head football coach.

Shadowens cited the need to spend more spend more time with his family as the reasons to step down.

“My family and I prayed about it,” Shadowens said. “It was God leading me to this decision. It was time for me to do something else.”
I wish him luck on where ever he goes, and I hope the team can keep bringing home the championship.

Ban it

A senator is attempting to ban sweet foods in public schools, and I may surprise many by being for it.
Why? Because it really is good for the children, but in ways the government would never suspect, or desire. This ban will be a very educational experience for the children. A true lesson is small business economics.

There is a saying that a true black market can only exist when an item is over regulated. A government enforced ban is the best example of an over regulated market that can be found.

Into this void of supply will step children with an entrepreneurial spirit. A desire to make money. The lessons they learn will be better then any time spent reading economics 101 in a classroom. Free marketers at their best.
Helping create the next generation of business leaders one ban at a time.

WIN!!!!!!

The Smyrna football team scores another championship.
This stage belonged to Smyrna from the word go.

The Bulldogs scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and cruised to their second consecutive state title by routing Independence 46-20 in the Class 5A BlueCross Bowl on Saturday night at Middle Tennessee State's Floyd Stadium.
One thing that should be noted is that the player named "most valuable offensive player" is a freshman, and will be around for the next few years for more games, and hopefully more championships.
Bryson, named the games most valuable offensive player, rushed for 87 yards in the first half and scored three times as Smyrna (12-3) jumped out to a 33-0 lead.

The freshman had scoring runs of 5, 1 and 42 yards in the first half, and added a 16-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Way to go guys.

Lawsuits and Smyrna

About this time last year I posted on a lawsuit that had been filed against the town of Smyrna, the council, and several other town employees.
Last nights town meeting started with a lawsuit for $800,000.00. I was setting up my camera and a lady walked around handing out some xerox papers that had been stapled together. Thinking it was the meetings agenda, that I already had, I declined. She said this is a lawsuit and gave me a copy.
..........
The situation that brought about this suit started in 2000 over a fence built on the Shelton's neighbors property, next to 106 Vanderford Lane. This was followed by code complaints, issues with the town council, issues with the codes department, possible uninformed code changes, and complaints of being denied the right to address the city council.
At the September 27th town council workshop town attorney Michele Elliott announced that the case had been dismissed with prejudice. Meaning that it could not be refiled.

She also announced that the city had won a partial summery judgement in a lawsuit that involved Percy priest lake and water rights. I don't know enough on this subject to give details, but Smyrna AM or the DNJ will have an article in the near future with more details. I do know that it involved a multi-million dollar claim against the city.

Remember the Jena 6 t-shirt at the Smyrna High School? Seems that the student has filed a lawsuit against the school district.
A student who was not allowed to wear her "Free the Jena Six" T-shirt to her high school filed a lawsuit on Thursday against the Rutherford County Board of Education and her school's assistant principal, alleging they violated her First Amendment rights.
...........
The Supers' attorney, W. Alan Alder, is a civil rights attorney in Nashville. He said the school does not have the authority to censor shirts based only on a fear that something might happen.

"It must be substantially more than that," he said, citing Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, a 1969 Supreme Court case that ruled public schools may only censor student speech if they can reasonably forecast it will cause a material disruption or invade the rights of others.

The lawsuit asks for an injunction to allow students to wear shirts that say "Free the Jena Six" to school. The Supers also are asking for a non-specified amount in damages and attorney fees.
I wonder how many Jena lawsuits against schools are being filed, or planned.

Well that's it for This is Smyrna, TN.'s lawsuit roundup.

Smyrna teenager told to remove Jena 6 shirt

A local teen wore a shirt showing support for 6 young men being railroaded in Louisiana, but found that the high school administrators said it was "disruptive".
Dani Super, a Smyrna High School sophomore, wore a T-shirt supporting the teenagers at school.

"I just want to support these boys," Dani said.

She said she wasn't trying to cause any trouble.

"I just wanted to help," she said.

Dani and her mother were surprised when school officials asked her to change the shirt.
More information on who the Jena 6 are can be found here.
