"Raise the Roof"

After 8 months of hard work following the roof collaspe at the Smyrna Bowling Center we are about ready to re-open "This End". The center has been open all this time while we have been working hard to get things back to normal. We have brand new 40 inch flat screen monitors now, new carpet being installed, and a much larger meeting room. October 30th is when we plan to have our grand re-opening of "This End". The event will be a huge event with many vendors outside in the parking lot, while those that come inside will get "One free game and shoes"! I am currently looking for a few more vendors that have something for the young people to do. We are asking that the children come in costume so they can trick or treat outside with our vendors. This is going to be as family event for all!!

Vendors that are attending:

Smyrna Fire Dept.
D.A.R.E
National Guard (rock wall)
P.A.L.
Pony rides
inflatable
Divilla's chocalote
Ron Knight Art
Chris' Gifts
and
much much more

Make plans now to attend this event starting at 11am and running until 6pm on Oct. 30th

Weekend events...

Well Summer is right around the corner but with the weather nice and hot, there is much events going on this weekend. If you notice more traffic than normal this weekend this is why. As most of you know starting on June 11Th it's the annual CMA Music fest in the downtown Nashville area with over 50,000 fans descending on the area. Also gates open at 7am on June 11Th for the biggest party in the south. That's right, it's Bonnaroo time!. Make sure you plan for travel delays if you heading south on I-24 towards Manchester Tn. Also there is another event going on in our great town which is expected to bring about 1,000+ visitors to Smyrna. It's the annual Tn Top 5 YABA bowling tournament over at the Smyrna bowling center. This where the top 5 out of each division from every bowling center in the state are coming into town to compete to see who is the best! We are gearing up now to have over 52 lanes full on Sat and Sun starting at 8am both days! Stop by and show your support for your local bowlers!

Job openings in Smyrna

The government has created some job openings in Smyrna the old fashion way. They arrested the old employees.
Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided at least three businesses owned by restaurant entrepreneur Stanley Wang on Tuesday, including The New Famous Chinese Restaurant in Nashville, Chef Wang's in Murfreesboro and the Famous Chinese Restaurant in Smyrna.

About 50 suspected illegal immigrants were identified and detained during the sweep, Nashville-based Assistant United States Attorney Lee Deneke said in a statement issued Wednesday. Those detained were citizens of Mexico, the People's Republic of China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Malaysia and Indonesia.
The discussion on the article and this one is lively.

In Smyrna this week the town has three meetings scheduled
Next Town Council Meeting is: May 13, 2008 - 7:00 PM
Board of Zoning Appeals: May 15, 2008 - 5:00 PM
Project Assistance: May 13, 2008 -5:30PM
The town meeting agenda is below for those who would like to view it.

The meeting marked "Project assistance" is about utilities for those in need.
PROJECT ASSISTANCE
Giving those in our community in need a hand up with their utility bills. It's easy. All you have to do is add $1.00 to your monthly utility bill. Just ask the Smyrna Utility Representative how to help those unable to pay their utility bill.
A voluntary town run program. Sounds good to me.

We are awaiting the delivery

A local blogger named Amber is on the verge of creating a little sub-domain called a child and is due anytime if i count my weeks correctly.

Almost 31 weeks
So I have about 9 weeks left of this pregnancy. I think I will be glad once its all over. Finally getting to meet this karate kicking machine that moves all the time. Matt and I still haven't decided on a name yet. 'Trenton' is high on the list. Everytime I start to like a name he suggests, he comes up with another and decides he changed his mind on the last name. GRR! Now he is liking the name 'Victor' but all I can think of is Days of Our Lives. So that name is way out and not even going to be considered. Not that I hate Days, I just hate relating my child's name to something or someone that has no personal meaning to me.
In mid February thinks were even closer.

36 weeks
Sorry for not updating like I should. Went to the Docs this morning. Everything is good. I gained 1 pound in the last month. I am now my official heaviest at 200lbs. I hope not to go beyond that within the next 3 weeks or so of being pregnant.
No update for a few weeks so I am on edge and hope things are okay.

Call us Amber.

Accident

While driving home Sunday night I came across the Smyrna Fire Department and others clearing out a car accident on Hazzelwood on the street in front of Darlins.

My camera sucks and the giant lights used to illuminate the night destroyed most images in my camera, but did get two.

They were in the process of "cleaning" up. One person was sweeping and cleaning oil or gas, and there was a vehicle loaded upon a flat bed tow truck.

I really need to get a better camera then this cheap HanShing Cam my MIL purchased on ebay years ago. I got it out of pity.

Go float a boat

..and have fun while you do it.

The Stones River Watershed Association with the Tennessee Scenic Rivers Ass'n is having a river float that sounds like fun this coming weekend.
The Stones River Watershed Association invites the public to float the Stones River on Saturday, October 20 on the stretch of river between Walter Hill and Mona boat dock on Percy Priest Lake. This year's event is a joint Stones River Watershed Association / Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association float.

The group will meet at Walter Hill Park north of Murfreesboro at 10 AM and should be at Mona by 3 PM. This is a 5.6 mile stretch of river and lake. The first 2 miles is a series of pools and shoals with the last part of the trip on Percy Priest Lake. All shoreline is U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property and undeveloped. There may be a few horses alongshore as a horse trail follows the river. Parts of this section will be the site of Murfreesboro's Greenway extension.

Attendees should bring a lunch since the group will stop along the way for a picnic. To register contact Bob Higman at 615-376-3682 or bobhigman@comcast.net.
If you don't have a boat the article mentioned that there will be a number available for rent.

The flu shots are here

If you are one to get regular flu shots, then the time is ripe for you to go get them.
The chill that just entered the air should serve as a reminder that flu season is officially here.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu season starts as early as October and can last until May. State health officials said there is no way to predict how severe this year's flu season will be.
The DNJ has a good article, and a very detailed list of places, prices, and times to help you find a good place to get your flu shots.

I'm one of the people who avoid flu shots. In the time I lived in Kansas, everytime I ever got a shot, I ended up with the flu later in the flu season.

Depot Days

Depot Days is just one day this year, and that leaves me a bit in a quandary.

I went to check out how much a table/booth would be. I have had the idea since I first first heard of depot days of setting up a "This is Smyrna, TN." table. Maybe print some fliers and even make a few t-shirts for sale. Kathy showed me how easy it would be to put some graphics on the shirts.

Regretfully they want $50 dollars a booth. Not a big amount, but I'm short of funds right now, and the timing can not be worse.

Options. Do I ask the rich readers(ha ha) of This is Smyrna, TN. to help fund it, or just walk through the crowds handing out some informational fliers?

Any suggestions? I see Depot Days as a chance to let more people know of this website and other connected web pages, and I don't want to miss the opportunity.

The Middle Tennessee Blogger and Podcaster's Group Meeting

Thanks to all who came out today. I appreciate the friendships I have developed over the years. Our get togethers are always something I look forward to.

Now, we discussed today scheduling the next meeting for Saturday, November 3. However, I would like to propose something else this time around. I've noted that many have been asking for weeknight meetings. I think this would be a wonderful idea but would propose it on a Friday. What say you about meeting on Friday, November 2nd at the Smyrna Bowling Alley at 7:30? I know one of my fellow MTBPG Members has some awful hours and may not be able to stay awake that long but it would be fun if we could get together, have a few brewskies and maybe even throw a ball or two down a lane though mine would probably end up in the gutter.

Looking forward to your response.
