In the market...

As many of you know the housing market has taken a beating but with prices low and many homes on the market, Right now is the best time to buy your new home. As a first time home buyer I have enjoyed the many benefits of owning my very first home. Working out in the yard, planting flowers and even a little entertaining from time to time. If you are thinking about buying your very first home or haven't owned a home in 3 or more years than you have an first time home buyers credit coming to you of $8,000 and it will only be available for another few months. If your looking for a realtor with professional attitude and a caring heart then look no further for I have found you one. She is based in La Vergne Tn and works locally with those that are selling or buying a home. She worked so very hard for me to find me the home of my dreams! Don't be afraid to email her or call her. When calling her tell her I sent you. Good luck and happy house hunting!

Smyrna car dealership

Smyrna is lacking in car dealerships. Not car lots as we have them. I'm talking corporate dealers and now we will soon be one short.
The only local dealer to acknowledge getting a letter, though, was Team Chevrolet of Smyrna, which is operating under control of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. It's waiting for permission from GM to transfer its franchise to a new owner, Smyrna Mayor Bob Spivey
Isn't Team Chevrolet the only dealership in town. We do have used car lots but this is the dealership.

Happily they are not rolling over and dying.
Team Chevrolet of Smyrna, Tenn., got GM's notice and will switch to used-vehicle sales only. The closure letter was "kind of what we expected," general manager Chuck Hanes said. The company already was operating in its own bankruptcy reorganization, and was waiting for permission from GM to transfer its franchise to a new owner, Smyrna Mayor Bob Spivey.

"Our plans are to move forward with the pre-owned operation and keep as many of our 35 employees in place as we can," Hanes said.
I'm glad they plan on staying open. Team Chevrolet is a well established company in town and right now any closings hurt.

Good Gun Shop

I just found a great little gun store next door to Smyrna.

If you're looking for ammo (WalMart is pretty much sold out of the common stuff right now), rifles, handguns, etc., check out Specialty Arms II in LaVergne.

They seem to be quite helpful, well-staffed and knowledgeable. The way the economy is, you might want a little squirrel-popping gun before too long. (They're great curried. Of course, even a shoe would be good with curry... but it's a LOT harder to digest than a tree rat.)

Here's the info:

Another chicken post

Seems backyard chickens is being called a movement....except here in Smyrna's government.
Chickens could be coming to roost in a backyard near you.

Across the country and the metropolitan area, people are joining the national urban chicken movement, sometimes turning outlaw to raise the birds.

The movement started with the rationale that raising chickens fits in with efforts toward local and pure foods, supporters say, and the eggs are fresh and flavorful. The animals also are entertaining pets, many say.

Today, Overland Park homeowner David Crupper will seek a special-use permit to house up to four chickens, even though he already has the birds and a homemade coop in his backyard.

No disrespect for the law was intended, he said, but he had to buy the chicks before a farm supply business stopped selling them for the year.
It might be time for some of our readers to email the council and ask them to look into this again.

I really like this part of the article.
In Kansas City, residents are allowed to have chickens only if they are 100 feet away from the nearest home or business, and the birds are not allowed to roam.

That hasn’t stopped two women in different Kansas City neighborhoods from raising chickens illegally, and they say they are doing it for the fresh eggs.
................
Both of the Kansas City women said their neighbors haven’t complained, and some are checking into getting chickens themselves.

So does that mean more chickens and lawbreaking are on the way?
When it comes to dumb ass regulations like this I'm all for breaking the law...The more the merrier.

Small-town Virtue

I've been reading through a collection of Plutarch's "Lives." This evening I came across this good quote:

"The arts which men cultivate for the sake of glory or profit are indeed apt to fall into decay in poor and obscure towns; but virtue, like a stout and hardy plant, takes root in any place where it finds a noble nature and a spirit ready to put forth effort. Hence, if we fail to think and to live as we ought, we cannot in justice blame the smallness of our native city for it, but ourselves."

Plutarch, from the "Life of Demosthenes."

Smyrna isn't the biggest place on the map, or the richest or most influential - but we've certainly had our virtuous men and women. Maybe you're one of them?
