Fighting against ourself

A simple question. Should the town use your tax money to fund a 'business' that openly competes with private businesses?

As part of the Parks Master Plan the town has started the design of the addition and renovation of the town's only fitness center located on Sam Ridley Parkway. Although the construction is not funded at this time the Town of Smyrna has hired Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon to design the project. The plan includes the addition of gymnasiums, indoor walking track, renovated outdoor aquatic areas, renovated park offices and renovated fitness space. We are extremely excited about this project for many reasons.

These are services provided by private gyms, the YMCA, and other businesses. Should the town compete with them?

I'm glad that the town has such an impressive park system, but this part of it has always been a little questionable to me.
